‘Hocus Pocus 2’: The Sanderson Sisters Are Finally In Talks to Return for the Disney+ Sequel
Hocus Pocus has become a Halloween staple for an entire generation. So fans of the original film — which stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy — were thrilled to learn a sequel is coming to Disney+. But such a film would only work with the original trio on board for Hocus Pocus 2. Reportedly, this is closer than ever to happening.
‘Hocus Pocus’ has become a classic since its 1993 theatrical release
Nowadays, Hocus Pocus might have gained classic status among some viewers. But the movie — which follows three modern-day kids and a talking cat as they attempt to defeat three 17th century witches — wasn’t initially a huge hit. In fact, its 1993 release was eclipsed by the success of Free Willy, which came out the same week.
Against a production budget of $28 million, Hocus Pocus earned $39 million. So Disney recouped its investment in the project. But it certainly wasn’t popular enough to warrant a sequel. After more than 25 years though, Hocus Pocus 2 feels like it has a built-in audience ready and waiting for more of the Sanderson sisters.
A sequel is in the works for a Disney+ premiere
When Disney revealed a new Hocus Pocus was in the works, many longtime fans initially feared it would be a remake. However, as time has gone on, it’s become apparent the project is actually intended as a sequel. Now at last Midler, Parker, and Najimy are in talks to reprise their roles, according to The Disinsider.
No official announcements have yet been made. And at this point, it remains unclear if the actors have signed on. But it seems talks are ongoing. Given the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, discussions about Hocus Pocus 2 are taking place over Zoom. Fans still have to wait until the movie’s cast is confirmed. Still, this is a great sign.
When can fans expect to finally see ‘Hocus Pocus 2’?
To their credit, Midler, Parker, and Najimy are always seemed up for returning to their witchy ways for Hocus Pocus 2. The question of their return rested mostly on the studio. Yet it appears Disney is listening to the fans on this one. Perhaps Thora Birch, Vinessa Shaw, and Omri Katz — who played the kids facing off against the witches — might return too.
Right now, there’s still a lot unknown about Hocus Pocus 2. Presumably, the movie will take place in the present day. But plot details are scarce. And though director Adam Shankman’s movie is eyed for a release directly on Disney+, the studio has not announced a release date just yet. Stay tuned for more on the movie as production ramps up.
