‘Hocus Pocus’ Writer Shares Which Characters Made This Disney Channel Original Movie So Iconic
With so many memorable and quotable parts of Hocus Pocus, it’s hard to choose a favorite. Still, one of the writers behind this movie shared his thoughts on why it’s still so iconic. Here’s what we know about the Disney Channel original film and its potential sequel on Disney’s streaming platform.
‘Hocus Pocus’ premiered during 1993
It’s just a bunch of hocus pocus — or is it? When one virgin lights the black flame candle on Halloween night, he gets way more than he bargained for. Although they may be witches, a favorite of many Hocus Pocus fans are the Sanderson Sisters, Winifred, Sarah, and Mary.
Portrayed by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy respectively, these witches aim to suck the life out of the children of Salem. They even perform “I Put a Spell on You” at a Halloween party. They are defeated by Max. However, their legacy lives on in the hearts of those who watch the film.
Why is ‘Hocus Pocus’ still so popular?
There’s been talks about resurrecting the Sanderson Sisters (again) for a sequel to the iconic Halloween film. Although nothing has been confirmed, writer Mick Garris discussed the secret to Hocus Pocus’ success.
“I’m excited about it, but I really think the main reason the movie worked was the Sanderson Sisters, those actresses in those roles, those performances, that I think is the key to that movie’s long life,” Garris said during an interview with ComicBook.com.
“It was only modestly successful when it came out, at best. And I think they are the reasons that it’s still around since it came out in 1993. And I would love to see them return in it,” he continued. “I think that’s the plan, but I don’t know. I heard that that is what’s happening, and I believe it’s going to be for Disney+, but I’m not involved in it, which is fine. You don’t always want to revisit all of the touchstones of your past.”
Will there be a ‘Hocus Pocus 2’ on Disney+?
There’s good news for fans of this cult classic film. Hocus Pocus 2 has been confirmed as a TV movie, to be available on Disney’s streaming platform, Disney+. Workaholics writer and co-producer, Jen D’Angelo, will pen the script, according to Vulture.
The premiere date of this sequel, however, is still unknown, as is the official cast of this production. Some hope for the return of the Sanderson Sisters, although the cast has not been confirmed either. Until then, plenty of Halloween-related movies are available on Disney’s streaming platform.
That includes the original Hocus Pocus, as well as movies like Halloweentown, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and The Haunted Mansion. To learn more about Disney’s streaming platform and to subscribe, visit their website.
