Holly Marie Combs Hated the ‘Charmed’ Reboot
Many old TV shows are being rebooted, and Charmed made the list. Not all of the original cast members are fans, however.
Some of them had strong words to say, according to Screen Rant, it got a lot of attention. Here’s what some of the original cast members think of the reboot.
The original ‘Charmed’ was an instant hit
The original Charmed was a show about three young women who discover they have magical powers. They’re a group known as ‘the charmed ones,’ and it is their duty to fight the forces of evil.
The sisters take their duties seriously, but they still have to live normal lives while battling bad guys. Killing the latest monster takes on a new level of hardship when you have to call in to work first, and then find a babysitter for your child.
The show was filled with comedy, but could turn tragic at the drop of a hat. It also had a campy feel to it thanks in large part to the special effects used. Charmed managed to pull in viewers and keep their attention, which can be hard to do these days.
After eight seasons, the show finally came to an end, and fans were deeply disappointed. Then when the news that Charmed was going to be rebooted, it gave new hope to fans that had been around when the original premiered twenty years previously. Not everyone was pleased with the reboot, however.
The rebooted ‘Charmed’ promised to bring in more feminism
The newly rebooted Charmed certainly took a few themes from the original show, but it didn’t follow the original storyline. This gave it a chance to stand on its own, rather than following the tried and true method.
Once again, three sisters learned they have magical powers after their mother dies. They also have a Whitelighter to guide them and offer advice when they need it most.
The notable differences is that the cast is now more diverse. The sisters have a Latina heritage. They also live in Hilltowne, Michigan rather than San Francisco.
The premise of the show tends to remain the same, with the sisters being tasked with fighting the forces of evil. In spite of this, the reboot hasn’t found the place in audience hearts that the original has.
It has been renewed for a season three, however, so there’s always a chance that it can find a way to find an audience on its own.
Holly Combs blasted the reboot
Holly Combs is not a fan of the rebooted series, and took offense to the way it was being labeled as ‘more feminist’ than the original. In a tweet, Combs stated, “Let me say first that I appreciate the jobs and opportunities the new Charmed reboot has created. But I will never understand what is fierce, funny, or feminist in creating a show that basically says the original actresses are too old to do a job they did 12 years ago.”
This obviously led to a feud among the original cast members and the new. Sarah Jeffrey took to Twitter to fire back, according to Entertainment, and called out Combs and Rose McGowan for comments they made about the reboot.
Not all members of the original cast were against the reboot, however. Alyssa Milano wasn’t happy, but she did wish the reboot well.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Milano stated, “I wish they would have come to us, and we would have been involved since the beginning. But, having said that, I hope that it reaches the newer generation and impacts that generation the way ours was able to do for our generation.”
Shannen Doherty also seems cool with the reboot, and tweeted: “I’m intrigued by the idea that a new generation might be comforted, inspired like all you were. Charmed helped us all in some way.”
