Home Before Dark Season 2 has arrived, bringing a brand new mystery to Erie Harbor. The Apple TV+ series follows a young journalist named Hilde Lisko (played by Brooklynn Prince), who moved to a lakeside town with her investigative journalist father and their family. As Hilde quickly discovered, the town had many secrets.
With an insatiable curiosity and an eye for detail akin to Veronica Mars, Hilde set out in season 1 to discover the truth about a boy named Richie Fife who disappeared from Erie Harbor several years ago. Now, she’s working to uncover another secret in season 2.

What is ‘Home Before Dark’ Season 2 about?
After the events of the Richie Fife case, Hilde continues her search for the lost boy, convinced that he is still alive and hiding somewhere in or outside of Erie Harbor. However, a mysterious explosion and some aggressive thunderstorms draw her attention to a new investigation.
With the help of friends Spoon (Deric McCabe) and Donny (Jibrail Nantambu), Hilde begins an investigation into some environmental abuse that leads to dead birds and fish in the area. What else might the town be hiding, and will it put everyone in danger? As the trailer suggests, this case might connect to Richie Fife’s disappearance and could become Hilde’s most important story yet.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Dana Fox, who co-wrote Cruella, revealed why she introduced a new story in Home Before Dark Season 2.
“I always pretend that I’m the audience whenever I make anything. As an audience member, when I fall in love with TV shows and when I come back for the second season, I want the things that I loved about it to be kind of the same, so I’m still watching the same show, but then I want it to surprise me and get bigger and expand,” she said. “That was my goal: Give you the stuff you loved from season 1 but make sure that season 2 feels like its own thing that is expanding the world and deepening the characters and making you love it even more.”

‘Home Before Dark’ draws inspiration from Hilde Lysiak’s true reporting
Home Before Dark takes inspiration from Hilde Lysiak, a real journalist in Pennsylvania who started her own newspaper at just 8 years old. Much like Hilde Lisko, Lysiak took after her father and investigated a murder case in her town.
According to Fox, Lysiak’s bravery played a big role in the fictional Hilde’s personality, especially in season 2.
“That comes from the feeling I got from watching the real Hilde’s stuff. There’s this one video that went viral at one point where she’s chasing drug dealers down the street,” she told EW of the season’s Hilde-versus-adults moments. “She’s on foot with her camera out, yelling at them. I’m going, ‘Oh my god, sweetheart, you’re in actual danger!’ But the one thing I’ll say is it’s really important to me to show Hilde having that bravery and standing up for herself and being strong.”
