How Differently Does Kate Middleton Dress When She Isn’t on Duty?
Prince William’s wife Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge has earned a reputation as a style icon for always looking so polished and put together every time she steps out for a royal engagement. But many royal fans have wondered how she actually dresses when she’s not working.
Here’s the answer to what the duchess wears when she’s not required to be out and about for royal duties.
Kate stuns at galas, dinner parties, and award ceremonies
Kate has made plenty of best-dressed lists over the years and is known as one of the most stylish women in the world no matter how many times she recycles an outfit or which designer she wears. And it’s no secret that one of the duchess’ favorite fashion labels is Alexander McQueen.
The future queen really loves Sarah Burton’s designs and has worn them for several special occasions. Kate chose McQueen’s creative director to design her lace wedding dress back in 2011. She also chose a blush pink dress by the fashion house for her sister Pippa’s wedding in 2017.
Aside from those events, the mother of three has stunned in McQueen countless times.
Some of the duchess’ other fave brands over the years have included Reiss, Erdem, Top Shop, L.K. Bennett, and Jenny Packham.

So what does Kate wear when she’s not on the clock?
On March 6, fresh off her royal tour to Ireland with Prince William, the duchess was seen shopping at a bookstore in London. She was dressed down in a baby blue Mulberry coat with a matching turtleneck, skinny jeans, and black loafers.
Another casual brand she loves is Zara. She’s a huge fan of the label and has worn Zara for more than just lounging around the palace and running errands. In fact, Kate has been photographed wearing Zara for a number of events every year since she’s been married.
In 2011, the duchess was spotted in a pleated blue dress from the brand on her way to her honeymoon with William. In 2012, she sported a pair of bright blue pants from Zara to accept the Olympic Torch at the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics. The following year, Kate donned a rhinestone statement necklace from the retailer to the premiere of Mandela. In 2014, she brought a navy Zara blazer on her and the prince’s royal tour to Australia and New Zealand. She had a white blazer on hand during their tour to Canada in 2016 as well.
Also in 2016, William’s wife showed up to Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday in a red Zara peacoat. In 2017, Kate had on a pair of dark-colored pants from the retail chain while visiting aircraft cadets. The next year she was spotted wearing a light blue and white Zara dress while with her children watching Prince William compete for the Maserati Royal Charity Polo trophy. In 2019, she sported a sparkly black Zara headband and in January 2020, the Duchess of Cambridge turned heads in long leopard print skirt by the fast-fashion retailer.
So whether she’s appearing at a royal affair or playing in the park with her children Kate has proven Zara is one brand she prefers on and off duty.
