‘How I Met Your Father’: Hilary Duff Doesn’t Know Who the Father Is — ‘I’ve Given Up’
How I Met Your Father follows the How I Met Your Mother format by keeping fans in the dark about who the hopelessly romantic Sophie (Hilary Duff) ends up with. Many fans of the Hulu series desperately want to know who the father is, but it’s hard to find spoilers. Even Duff and many of the male leads are in the dark about who the father is.
Hilary Duff doesn’t know who the father is in ‘How I Met Your Father’
In an interview with The New York Times, Duff revealed she doesn’t know who the father is. “I’ve given up because they’re just going to cat-and-mouse me, bat me around,” she said.
Duff continued: “It’s actually kind of hard to navigate sometimes shooting because I have moments with all the guys [in the series].” According to her, How I Met Your Father is “almost like” ABC’s wildly successful dating series The Bachelor, “but better.”
“Everyone is a possibility,” Duff said of her male co-stars potentially being the father. “So I’ve given up guessing.”
Theories about who the ‘HIMYF’ father could be
Unlike HIMYM, which famously ended with the mother being a character whom fans met in season 8, the father appeared in the pilot of HIMYF. An older Sophie tells her son that she met his dad on the night the pilot takes place. So naturally, fans are considering all of the possible men who could be the father.
Uber driver Jesse (Chris Lowell), Ian (Daniel Augustin), and Drew (Josh Peck) seem like obvious choices. There’s a will-they-won’t-they tension between Sophie and Jesse. Sophie thinks Ian could be her soulmate, but he moved around the world. And Drew and Sophie hit it off on their first date, even if Sophie doesn’t think she’s mature enough for him.
Still, some other fans think more secondary characters featured in the HIMYF premiere could be the father, such as Sophie’s disastrous Tinder date or any of the other people at the bar in the first episode. And while it’s doubtful, Sophie’s newfound friends Sid (Suraj Sharma) and Charlie (Tom Ainsley) could always end up falling for Sophie at some point — but only if their current relationships fall apart.
The ‘How I Met Your Father’ cast doesn’t overthink the father’s identity
In an interview with TV Line, Lowell, Ainsley, and Sharma talked about the possibility of their characters being the father. “I don’t think you can look too far ahead,” said Ainsley. “I don’t think it would do justice to the relationship with Valentina [Francia Raisa].”
“For me, it’s about living in the moment and for Sid to be true to what he is doing at the time,” Sharma said. As for Lowell, HIMYF is about Jesse and Sophie learning to love themselves.
