Hilary Duff is currently starring on Hulu’s How I Met Your Father, which is a gender-swapped sequel to the hit show How I Met Your Mother.
Like Ted Mosby in the original series, Duff’s character, Sophie, is a hopeless romantic who is trying to find her true love among the singles of New York City. However, Duff has one dating rule that she wants Sophie to always follow on the show.
Sophie is willing to date many guys to find her soul mate
On the first episode of How I Met Your Father, it was revealed that Sophie had been on over 80 dates from Tinder. Even though all of them fizzled out for one reason or another, she is still determined to not give up on love.
“She’s just trying,” Duff told Entertainment Weekly. “I think sometimes it’s really hard to keep trying and to have a smile on your face and a personality while you do it. She is effervescent. The chick’s got stamina for days. I need to be in bed by nine every night, but I also have three children. I really admire her.”

Sophie will get into a lot of different situations as she tries to find love. However, Duff—who is a producer of the show—is adamant that Sophie’s female friendships are always respected by the plot.
“And talking about exploring female friendships, I think we’ll get an even bigger opportunity to do that because there are great women on this show too,” she told The Cut. “And the one thing that makes me a little nervous is Sophie’s dating and that’s her main goal is to find her true love. And so I think a lot of the guys are going to be an option. And I’m always, ‘She can’t cross any boundaries.’ She can’t cross a girlfriend to get to a guy.”
Duff is a champion of female friendships. After all, her other popular TV shows, such as Lizzie McGuire and Younger, showcase strong bonds between female friends. On How I Met Your Father, Sophie is extremely close with her roommate, Valentina, who has been with her through thick and thin.
Hilary Duff is grateful for her real-life friends
Duff shared with The Cut that she also values her female friends in real life.
“I feel so lucky to have my female friendships,” she explained. “And I would say there’s one, two, three, four, five, six … I’m so lucky to say that I have seven really strong female friendships, and I’ve had them for a long time. And that is absolutely who I turn to, what I need to ground me just to survive. To look to for advice, to learn, to cry, to let loose.”
She added, “It’s been nice to see that shift of just being so die-hard for your girls and not putting guys ahead of your female friends and not making your husband or your boyfriend be your everything. I mean, there’s a reason why women used to raise all the kids in a commune-type setting.”
