‘How I Met Your Father’ Season 2 Confirmed; Fans Speculate About What That Means for the Father Reveal in Season 1
Hulu officially renewed the spinoff series How I Met Your Father for a second season. The streaming service’s announcement surprised many fans, especially considering season 2 of HIMYF will be “supersized.” But does this mean the show won’t reveal who the father is at the end of season 1? Here’s what we know about the show’s plans to reveal who the father is.
‘How I Met Your Father’ Season 2 will have double the episodes of season 1
How I Met Your Father premiered on Jan. 18, 2022 with two episodes. The series is halfway through season 1 and the finale will air on Mar. 15. Hulu gave the green light for a second season on Feb. 15.
As Jordan Helman, Head of Scripted Content, Hulu Originals, told Deadline:
“[Creators] Isaac [Aptaker] and Elizabeth [Berger] ‘s inspired vision for How I Met Your Father has proven to be true appointment viewing that fans cannot get enough of week to week. The lives of these characters, as portrayed by the immensely talented cast led by Hilary Duff, are just starting to unfold and we’re thrilled to bring more of this group’s journey to our viewers with a supersized second season.”
Season 2 of How I Met Your Father will have 20 episodes instead of the usual 10. As the first multi-cam series Hulu has ever produced, there’s room for growth.
“We did 10, which obviously is very normal in this model, but it also flies by,” Berger told TVLine. “[After completing] 10 [we] went, ‘Oh my God, that was quick for multi-cam. We could have done a couple more,’ so I think we’ll take that into consideration.”
‘HIMYF’ fans think the Hulu series had a backup father in mind
Naturally, all many fans want to know is who the father of Sophie’s child is. But with season 2 of HIMYF confirmed, viewers aren’t likely to get an answer to that question soon.
“Does that mean the father hasn’t been determined yet, since I’d assume this season has already been taped in full?” said one Redditor.
“I assume they had a ‘backup’ father picked out,” another Reddit user replied. “In the original HIMYM, Victoria [Ashley Williams] would have been the mother if it had gotten canceled early on.”
“I imagine they probably filmed two versions of the final scene,” said another Redditor. “One if they got picked up, and one if they didn’t.” Another fan thinks the alternate ending would reveal Jesse [Chris Lowell] to be the father.
‘How I Met Your Father’ showrunners are still thinking about the show’s ‘endgame’
Unlike How I Met Your Mother, a show notorious for having its endgame mapped out from the beginning, How I Met Your Father is taking a more laid-back approach.
“Hopefully going forward, we can start mapping that out more specifically,” Berger told TVLine in January 2022, shortly before Hulu renewed the series for season 2. Now, those conversations can start getting more concrete.
