‘How I Met Your Father’: Sophie’s Son Could Have More Than One Father in the Hulu Series

How I Met Your Father fans are extremely curious about who the father is in the Hulu series. We know we’ve seen the father in the pilot episode of the How I Met Your Mother spinoff. But some fans expect a major plot twist involving more than one father figure. Here’s how that story could play out.

‘How I Met Your Father’ and ‘How I Met Your Mother’ are alike in many ways, but very different

The original series follows Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor/Bob Saget) as he told his two kids his love story. How I Met Your Father follows a similar format using a present-day narrator (Hilary Duff/Kim Cattrall) and flashbacks.

Both Sophie and Ted are hopelessly romantic, single, and living in New York City with their friends. Plus, Lily (Alyson Hannigan) and Marshall’s (Jason Segel) apartment is a fixture in How I Met Your Father.

While the shows share similarities, they’re also very different. Instead of seeing Sophie’s son, we see her — something that has caused speculation among some fans. Plus, the friend group in HIMYF is entirely different from the core group in HIMYM. 

‘How I Met Your Father’ fans think there could be two dads 

So far, fans have gotten minimal clues about who the father is. But we do know he was in the first episode of the Hulu series. Some fans think there could be more than one father figure in Sophie’s son’s life, though.

“Sophie is telling her son the true story of how she met his biological father, not the father he grew up with,” one fan on Reddit believes. They think Sophie’s re-telling the story because “she misses the gang that she left.” Their theory is based on the son’s lack of a reaction to the names of the potential father in the pilot, assuming he doesn’t know who his biological father is. 

In an extensive post, they flush out their theory, which says Sophie causes the group of friends to splinter when she sleeps with either Jesse (Chris Lowell), Sid (Suraj Sharma), or Charlie (Tom Ainsley), resulting in pregnancy. Hoping to avoid more damage, Sophie hides her pregnancy and moves away, marrying another man who her son believes is his father until she shares her story. 

Others think Sophie is lying about the father in ‘HIMYF’ 

HIMYF fans are expecting the writers (who also worked on How I Met Your Mother) to “mess with their heads.” In another Reddit thread, fans talked about Sophie potentially lying to her son about his father. 

“What if the point of the story is … it’s Sophie’s way to tell her son that she lied about who the father is,” they said. “I can’t imagine the show being just a nice simple story with simply the twist being there was more people at the party than the main cast.”
