The Captain was one of the most beloved recurring characters in CBS‘s How I Met Your Mother. His eccentric behavior as a man obsessed with all things nautical made for plenty of crying laughing moments. And the main characters in How I Met Your Mother couldn’t seem to get rid of him, and fans were forever grateful.

The Captain was last seen in ‘How I Met Your Mother’ Season 9

How I Met Your Mother introduced viewers to The Captain, played by Kyle MacLachlan, in season 6. He was the husband of Zoey Pierson, who was trying to stop the destruction of The Arcadian and the construction of the new GNB tower designed by Ted Mosby. The Captain’s real name is George Van Smoot, but he prefers to be called by his nickname.

As Ted and Zoey grew closer, she decided to leave The Captain and begin a relationship with Ted. However, even after the divorce and Ted and Zoey’s breakup, The Captain continued to pop up in the show now and then. A season 8 episode showed a flashback when Ted, Lily, and Robin ran into him at an art exhibit. And a year later, The Captain asked Lily to be his art consultant, and she accepted.

Later in the season, The Captain informed Lily he was moving to Rome for a year, and he wanted her to accompany him. Lily and Marshall eventually decided to join him in Italy.

The last time fans saw The Captain was in How I Met Your Mother Season 9 Episode 20. Lily escaped to his house after a fight with Marshall, and she took a positive pregnancy test. The episode also revealed that The Captain was engaged to Becky, aka the “Boats Boats Boats” girl Ted previously dated.

And in a deleted scene from the final season, fans discovered that the mysterious pineapple from How I Met Your Mother Season 1 was from The Captain.

‘How I Met Your Father’ Season 1 Episode 9 features a cameo by The Captain

How I Met Your Father Season 1 Episode 9 surprisingly began with The Captain in bed with an unknown woman. And as fans know, The Captain was engaged to Becky the last time we saw him in How I Met Your Mother.

And right on queue, Becky walked into the room and seemingly caught her husband cheating on her.

Unfortunately, we have no idea how their story ties into How I Met Your Father or what will happen next between The Captain and Becky. It’s probably safe to say that next week’s finale will have all the answers, though.

Who else could show up in ‘How I Met Your Father’?

Now that The Captain appeared in How I Met Your Father, the possibilities are endless for cameos from How I Met Your Mother characters. And one actor from the first show wants to cross over to the new series.

Charlene Amoia, who played Wendy the Waitress in How I Met Your Mother, told ComicBook.com she would be open to reprising the character in the spinoff. She said, “Oh, of course. I mean, that was such a lovely time in my life, and it was such a great group of people, absolutely.”

There is only one episode left in How I Met Your Father Season 1, but Hulu renewed the show for a twenty-episode season 2. So, hopefully, fans will continue to see How I Met Your Mother characters pop up in the spinoff.
