How Kanye West ‘Convinced’ Kim Kardashian West Not to End Their Marriage in 2016
In February 2021, Kim Kardashian West filed for divorce from Kanye West after six years of marriage. News of their impending divorce wasn’t a huge shock to fans, especially since the pair had been dealing with some serious marital issues leading up to their split.
Though Kardashian West had finally reached her breaking point in her marriage, this isn’t the first time she’s wanted to call it quits from the rapper. Back in 2016, the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star was considering ending their relationship. But according to a family friend, the Grammy winner convinced her to stay with him — and here’s how he did it.
Kim Kardashian West wanted to end her marriage to Kanye West in 2016
When Kardashian West and West tied the knot in 2014, it seemed as though they had a long and happy marriage ahead of them. However, just two years after becoming husband and wife, the pair found themselves faced with divorce rumors.
In late 2016, it was reported that the couple’s marriage was on the rocks after the “Famous” rapper was hospitalized in Los Angeles for exhaustion. West’s admittance came after he criticized friends and associates in the music industry on stage during his “Saint Pablo” tour.
Though Kardashian West was by his side during his hospital stay, West eventually left California without his wife, sparking rumors that the pair were having marital problems.
Though nothing ever came out of this rumor, a source later reported that the KKW Beauty mogul was close to calling it quits from West at that time.
Kanye West ‘convinced’ Kim Kardashian West to stay with him by promising to go to therapy
In January 2017, Us Weekly reported that Kardashian West was looking to pull the plug on her romance with West following his hospitalization. However, the rapper convinced her to stay with him by promising that he would take his mental health seriously moving forward.
“Kanye swore he was going to continue with intense therapy,” an insider shared with the outlet. “He really wants to get better and will do whatever it takes to get healthy.”
Not only was he going to focus on getting better, but West also planned to apologize to those he has wronged, including fellow rapper Jay-Z, who he had slammed for not calling after Kardashian West’s Paris robbery.
According to the source, Kardashian West wanted her husband to get better and, at the time, was coming to terms with the fact that his mental illness was the cause of all of his past actions.
“She didn’t realize how much of Kanye’s behavior stems from a mental illness,” the insider said. “When he’s doing the things his therapists tell him to do, she is so much happier.”
Kim Kardashian West has reached her wit’s end
Though she’s defended the rapper’s actions more times than once over the years, Kardashian West has finally had enough of West’s behavior.
Following his controversial presidential rally and his now-deleted Twitter rant in 2020, the reality star filed for divorce from the rapper, marking the end of their nearly 10-year love story.
“They are keeping it low-key but they are done,” a source told Page Six at the time. “Kim has hired Laura Wasser and they are in settlement talks.”
While there is still little information about the divorce filing, TMZ reported that the couple’s split was amicable and that Kardashian West sought to share joint custody of their kids, which West later agreed to.
As of this writing, Kardashian West and West’s divorce is still in the works. But seeing as both have been focused on their own lives and careers these last few months, it seems that it could be a while before their divorce is finalized.
