It’s hard to pinpoint the exact moment that Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes started dating. While some people believe that the romance kicked off around June following the release of their steamy video for “Señorita,” others have speculated that they didn’t become an item until much later.

Mendes revealed the length of their relationship during a Q&A at a recent concert in Hindmarsh, Australia. When a fan asked for clarity, the “Stitches” singer replied, “We haven’t been dating for that long. We have been dating since July 4 officially.”
The revelation seems accurate. Sources had previously told E! News that Mendes and Cabello were seen being all lovey-dovey in West Hollywood on July 4.
“He was holding her at one point and they were staring into the ocean,” the insider explained. “They both were smiling the entire time and Camilla was laughing a lot. They rarely mingled with other people and were together the entire evening. They were telling people they were a couple.”
Two days later, however, Mendes denied that they were together. But we guess he was just being coy.
How did Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes meet?
Reports say that these two met in 2014 when they opened for one of Austin Mahone’s tours. The following year, they teamed up and collaborated on the song, “I Know What You Did Last Summer.”
In promotion of the track, Cabello and Mendes appeared The Late Late Show with James Corden, where they faced questions about their relationship.
“There’s no way you haven’t made out,” Corden told the pair. In response, Mendes said, “We haven’t, actually. Every time I try and make a move, she swerves me off.” But Cabello placed the blame on him, saying, “He friend-zones me. He calls me ‘Kid!’”
Their mutual interest in each other seemed obvious. However, Cabello and Mendes both maintained that their relationship was totally platonic.

In 2016, Mendes told People that Cabello is just a close friend. “She is one of those people who is just very easy to connect with and still, to this day, is one of my greatest friends. You find that instant connection with people, and she’s one of them.”
For her part, Cabello said in a January 2018 appearance on The Zack Sang Show that Mendes is a “real” pal. “We’re always texting and always on the phone,” she explained. “We’re never in the same place at the same time but we’re always texting about random stuff. We talk about Harry Potter. I love Shawn, he’s a real friend.”
In hindsight, it’s wild to see how things turned out. But we’re glad that Mendes and Cabello built a strong foundation as friends before getting serious.
