How Long Have Elton John and David Furnish Been Together?

Elton John is an award-winning musician known all around the world for his angelic voice and his heartwarming songs. It seems like everyone that meets the iconic singer instantly loves him. In fact, he is even close to the entire Royal family.

Out of all of the people that Elton John has met in his life, one person that has seemed to make the biggest impact on his life was his husband, David Furnish. David is a well-known producer and director who has been Elton’s biggest supporter for over two decades.

Every time they attend a public function together, you can’t help but see just how in love these two are. So, how long have David and Elton been together? Here is a timeline of the lovebird’s relationship.

When did Elton and David first meet?

According to Good Housekeeping, Elton John was feeling a bit bored with his life and the same group of friends. So one day in 1993, he called up one of his friends and asked them to bring a new group of people to his house for a nice dinner. One of the new faces that showed up at his house that Saturday evening was David Furnish and sparks immediately flew.

“I was attracted to David immediately,” John said. “He was very well dressed, very shy. The next night we had dinner.”

At the time, David had just turned 31 years old and was an advertising director from Canada that lived in a flat in England. While he wasn’t considered poverty-stricken by any means, his life was certainly different than 46-year-old Elton’s life. By the time they had met, Elton had several number one albums, toured around the world, and lived in a multi-million dollar mansion.

David was a little insecure about their different lifestyles. In 2007, he had once commented on how he felt at the beginning of their relationship, saying: “He was a grown-up, and if I wanted to be in this relationship – which I did – then I would have to be grown up and realize that there were two people in this relationship, not just Elton.”

Their undying love

Even though they may have lived two totally different lives when they first met, they were able to create a bond based on their common interest which eventually turned into a fairytale-like love for one another.

In 2005, after dating for 12 years, Elton proposed to David at a dinner party that they were having at their home. On December 21 of that year, the two officially entered into a legal domestic partnership. They were one of the first gay couples to have done this in the United Kingdom.

Once same-sex marriage became legal in the UK, David and Elton got married on December 21, 2014. The couple didn’t really think that they had to get married but wanted to in order to celebrate the change of the law. Before his wedding, David had said:

“We don’t feel the need to take an extra step legally. But since we’re committed for life, we feel it is really important to take that step, and take advantage of the amazing change in legislation. We all live by example.”

Do they have any children together?

In 2010, David and Elton welcomed their son, Zachary, into the world via surrogate on Christmas day. They loved parenthood so much that they decided to have another child via surrogate a couple of years later. On January 11, 2013, the couple’s youngest son, Elijah, was born. 

Their two boys are now 6 and 8 years old. They are both growing up so fast and the family of four seems to be happier than ever.

Elton has also recently come out and said that he will be retiring to spend more time with his children. He is currently on his last tour that includes 300 shows and will end in 2020.

Elton told the Telegraph that he is afraid if he doesn’t stop touring soon, he will miss too many important moments in his children’s lives.

“When I stop, they’re going to be 10 and eight, and that’s a very important time in their lives,” Elton said. “I don’t want to miss them and I don’t want them to miss me. I’ve had a good run.”

How long have David Furnish and Elton John been together?

Elton and David have been together for 25 years. Every year, their love for each other only seems to grow. The fact that these two seem to have such a strong relationship with each other, we are sure that they will continue to be together for the rest of their lives.
