Cheryl Burke puts her heart and soul into each season of ‘DWTS’

Burke is a fierce competitor on Dancing With the Stars. In the past, she won back-to-back Mirror Balls during seasons 2 and 3 of the reality series. Once again, Burke is hoping to take first place with her Backstreet Boy partner in season 29.

Burke’s drive to succeed has helped her take home the Mirror Ball on more than one occasion. But her drive is also a great source of stress sometimes. “It’s because of my personality,” Burke explained on the “What MATTers Most” episode of the Pretty Messed Up podcast. “There’s no such thing as a gray area for me. I’m starting to see a pattern. When I commit to something, I am never stopping until it happens. I get very tunnel vision.”

Burke and her partner AJ Mclean talked about the “hustler” attitude she has with her husband Lawrence during the episode and dissected its impact on their relationship.

‘Dancing With the Stars’ takes a toll on Matthew Lawrence and Cheryl Burke’s marriage

After dating on and off again for several years, Burke and Matthews finally tied the knot in May 2019. Like any couple, their marriage has presented unique challenges. Because Burke puts all of herself into the Dancing With the Stars competition, that doesn’t leave her much time to give to Lawrence.

“[Burke being in the competition has] obviously gotta take a toll [on your relationship],” McLean said to Lawrence on the podcast.

“I respect [the time and energy Burke puts into show], Lawrence said. Still, that doesn’t mean her competing comes without challenges.

“Whenever I have those moments where I get a little frustrated — [it’s always about] the craziest little things when you think about it,” he continued. “[For] one, her not being here.” Burke’s long hours in the ballroom leave Lawrence feeling lonely.

Matthew Lawrence feels like he lives alone when Cheryl Burke competes on ‘DWTS’

It takes a lot of practice to win the Dancing With the Stars Mirror Ball. Almost every day, Burke and McLean have to rehearse for several hours at a time. This leaves Lawrence home alone a lot

“I’ll turn after five or six hours and [think] I’m just living here alone now,” he laughed during the episode. An apologetic McLean comforted Lawrence, who understands the amount of work required to win the competition.

Of course, Lawrence is OK with his wife’s profession. Like Burke and McLean, he would be happy to see them win the Mirror Ball this season. But when all is said and done, Lawrence is excited about one thing. “It’s going to be really nice to have her back,” he concluded. “I am sorting of counting down the days.”
