How Much Does Whoopi Goldberg Get Paid for ‘The View’?
On a normal day at The View, Whoopi Goldberg has her work cut out for her as moderator. As a recent SNL spoof suggested, that might involve breaking up an argument between Joy Behar and Meghan McCain before saving a segment from an inane Abby Huntsman comment.
When things are going well on the hit ABC show, Whoopi will lead an interesting discussion between the ladies at the table and brighten things up with a few solid jokes. Here ability to handle all of the above is what makes her the show’s indispensable star.
For that reason, fans and producers of The View face tense moments every year when it comes time for Whoopi to renew her contract. After all, someone worth close to $50 million isn’t likely to stay on for money alone.
However, the money certainly doesn’t hurt, and Whoopi gets paid well for her work.
Whoopi earns a reported $5-6 million a year at ‘The View.’
Considering all the craziness that’s gone on behind the scenes at The View, you can understand why the network would want to keep the salaries of the co-hosts under wraps. Nonetheless, there have been whispers of Whoopi’s annual paycheck from the gig.
They usually come late in the summer, when ABC gets together with Whoopi’s people to negotiate a contract extension. When Variety broke the story of her re-upping at The View a few years back, the reporters pegged her salary around the $5-$6 million range.
That number has held over the years, so we’d be surprised if it changed for the 2018-19 seasons. (We wouldn’t be surprised if Whoopi got a raise, however.) As regular viewers know, she takes Fridays off to work on projects.
Despite the rumors of her leaving the show in recent years, Whoopi celebrated her 10th anniversary at The View in 2017. Earlier this year, she explained that her daughter convinced her to stay aboard to stay “a part of the conversation” with the turmoil in Washington.
Whoopi’s lucrative side projects in TV and film
Outside of The View, Whoopi stays quite busy. In 2018, she appeared in six episodes of Instinct and did voice work on the animated The Stink & Dirty Show and BoJack Horseman. She also worked on films Furlough and the Tiffany Hadish comedy Nobody’s Fool.
As you can tell from her 177 acting credits, Whoopi is never far from her next project. In the coming years, she will work on several more animated projects and likely appear in more films as well.
Regarding another year at The View, expect the rumors about her leaving to start popping up around contract time. It would be a shame if Whoopi didn’t hang around for the 2020 election, but it’ll be her decision alone to make.
Fans may want to start lobbying her daughter to convince Whoopi to return once again. We can only imagine how Joy and Meghan McCain would behave during the election without her.
