Britney Jean Spears was born on Dec. 2, 1981, in McComb, Mississippi to parents Lynne and Jamie Spears. She grew up in Kentwood, Louisiana, and started singing and performing for others at an early age.

“Ever since I was 7 or 8 years old, my mom would have company over, and I was always performing for everybody in front of the TV,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “Even when I went to school, I was always the weird child; I would go outside and instead of playing I wanted to have Star Search competitions.”

That dream of being in a Star Search competition became a reality for Spears in 1992 when she appeared on the show and sang in front of a nationwide audience. She didn’t win, but her appearance on the show opened doors for her and she ended up being cast on Disney’s The All-New Mickey Mouse Club alongside Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera.

Spears has two children with her ex-husband, Kevin Federline, who she was married to three years before divorcing in 2007.

They welcomed their first son, Sean Preston, in 2005. The following year his brother, Jayden James, was born.
