‘Loki’: How Old Is Mobius? Here’s What Series Director Kate Herron Says
Marvel’s newest Disney+ series Loki has been a big hit among fans. The six-episode series starring Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson began streaming on June 9 and focuses on Loki’s story after the events of Avengers: Endgame.
One of the biggest questions Loki fans currently have is how old Wilson’s character, Mobius M. Mobius, really is. There are a few fan theories floating around the internet with differing ages, but nobody knows for sure.
However, Loki’s director Kate Herron has a theory of her own about how old he might be.
‘Loki’ director Kate Herron thinks Mobius is hundreds of years old
Herron discussed Mobius’ potential age during a recent interview with Collider, suggesting that he’s actually younger than one might assume.
“So, I think he must be quite a few hundred years old, but maybe not as old as we think,” Herron said.
Because the Time Variance Authority doesn’t operate within the normal realms of space and time, Herron believes that Mobius’ age isn’t what it might seem.
“So this is the way to explain it,” Herron said. “Because obviously, the TVA is outside of space and time, right? So I think he must be very—hundreds and hundreds of years old because time doesn’t affect him in the same way as it would if he was on Earth.”
She theorizes that everyone in the TVA is from the beginning of time
Later in the interview, she hypothesized that even though Mobius is likely several hundred years old, everyone else involved with the TVA has infinite age.
“But my theory is—and this is not like—this is just me guessing—I think we’re, I don’t know. … I’m just trying to work it out really, because I feel like he—I think quite a few hundred years old would be my guess. Because him and Renslayer have this really beautiful, deep friendship. And I think everyone at the TVA is like—arguably they’re all from the beginning of time. Because the timekeepers brought them into existence.”
Kate Herron says it’s nearly impossible to know how old Loki truly is
Despite her theories, Herron made sure to note that it’s difficult for anyone to truly figure out how old Mobius is.
“So I think it’s almost unknowable for us to—I mean, I’m so bad at math, I think it’s almost unknowable for us to work out how old he could possibly be. So it must be more than hundreds, actually,” she concluded.
Making sense of time travel was tricky for the ‘Loki’ creative team
Herron’s thoughts on Mobius’ age might seem confusing, but it’s only because making sense of time in Loki is very hard to do. In fact, Loki’s writing team had to work tirelessly to create rules about time travel and how it works.
“All over our writer’s room, our whiteboards were just covered in timelines,” John Waldron told Collider in a separate interview. “And it’s just, ‘No, time travel works this way,’ ‘No, time travel works that way.’ That was the great challenge of our show – because the Time Variance Authority is an organization that literally manages and polices all of time, we had to define what time is to them and what time is in the MCU. How does it move? What is time travel? How does it operate? And so, we had to essentially create an institutional knowledge among the writer’s room.”
Loki is now streaming on Disney+.
