Mary J. Blige burst onto the music scene in 1992 with her debut album What’s the 411? and instantly changed what women artists were capable of doing in the world of hip-hop. Her follow-up album My Life dove even deeper into issues of abuse and addiction and remains one of the most iconic R&B albums of all time.
She continued showing her musical prowess throughout the ’90s, and in 2001, she notched her first and only number 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart: “Family Affair,” produced by Dr. Dre. She performed at the Super Bowl halftime show that same year alongside Aerosmith, Britney Spears, and *NSYNC.

In addition to her work in the studio and on the stage as a musician, Blige has also made a name for herself as an actor. She first made her acting debut on The Jamie Foxx Show in 1998, and has since appeared on TV shows such as Empire, Black-ish, and How to Get Away With Murder.
In 2013, Blige played Dr. Betty Shabazz in the television movie Betty & Coretta, starring opposite Angela Bassett as Coretta Scott King. In 2015, she starred as the legendary villain Evillene in The Wiz Live!
2017 marked a pivotal moment for Blige’s acting career. She starred in the period drama Mudbound alongside Carey Mulligan, Jason Clarke, and Rob Morgan as Florence Jackson, the wife of a World War II veteran played by Morgan. Blige received Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Song for “Mighty River” and won several other awards.
After Mudbound, Blige experienced somewhat of an acting career renaissance. Her next big role was playing the villain Cha-Cha in Netflix’s popular series The Umbrella Academy. She told supermodel Naomi Campbell on her web series No Filter with Naomi that it came at the perfect time.
“That script for The Umbrella Academy came in and it was all action and it was all anger and it was all everything that I needed to get out of my system at the moment,” she said honestly.
Blige’s star as an actor continues to rise. She plays singer Dinah Washington in the upcoming Aretha Franklin biopic Respect and currently stars as Monet Tejada on Starz’s Power Book II: Ghost.
