Video social media apps have exploded in recent years, resulting in overnight stars. While many have become famous YouTubers over the years, it doesn’t compare to the quick success experienced by some TikTokers. One of the most notable TikTok trends is sharing recipes and cooking hacks, which TikToker Jeremy Scheck has gained a huge following doing. As one of today’s top cooking influencers, Scheck recently shared his tips for shopping farmer’s markets for creating fresh recipes this summer.

Who is Jeremy Scheck?

Recently celebrating his 22nd birthday, Scheck has always been interested in all things culinary. In addition to cooking in his home kitchen, he has worked at a local bakery and taught cooking classes at Williams-Sonoma, according to his bio on scheckeats.com. He is also pursuing a degree in Spanish and Italian at Cornell University, taking classes, such as nutrition, food science, and culinary science, to further his culinary dreams.

The young TikToker launched his @ScheckEats TikTok account in March 2020, during quarantine, to showcase his cooking skills while mixing in his fun-loving personality. Since his first video, Scheck has acquired over 2.1 million followers on the popular app. To further expand his reach for his cooking creations, Scheck has an upcoming cookbook in the works to continue ScheckEats’s ultimate goal “to share, learn, and enjoy.”

Navigate farmer’s markets with Scheck’s advice

In an exclusive Mashed interview, Scheck shared his cooking experience in Newell Creative Kitchen in Hoboken, New Jersey. According to Multivu, the brick-and-mortar space was developed to serve as a hub for content creation and kitchen inspiration, connecting people with the latest food and kitchen trends. The space did just that for Scheck by inspiring innovation and creativity to work on two farmer’s market-inspired recipes.

Scheck calls farmer’s markets his “happy place,” so he was excited to explore the fresh ingredients and use the fun Newell equipment to share his versatile recipes with fans. He shared with Mashed that he never goes to farmer’s markets with a list in mind, and he always just buys “what is in season and what looks good at that time.”

For example, for his Farmer’s Market Hummus, he suggested those who have trouble finding beets should use a head of garlic or red peppers and roast them to make delicious hummus with the freshest, local ingredients. Similarly, with his All the Veggies Pasta Primavera, one could use cherry tomatoes and fresh corn instead of asparagus and the Peppadew peppers, as the recipe can easily be adapted to fit in-season veggies. Recipe adaptability is one of Scheck’s main cooking philosophies as he always tries to include ways that people can switch up ingredients to fit their unique needs or items they have on hand.

As a veteran farmer’s market shopper, Sheck shared his top tip for a successful trip this season: always talk with the sellers to learn about their produce and ask about ways to cook with the ingredient or complimentary items for creating amazing dishes.

Creating multiple TikTok videos each week, many would believe that Scheck spends a lot of time planning out recipes and shopping for necessary ingredients. However, he shared that it’s more difficult for him to start with a recipe, and instead, he heads to the farmer’s market to see what looks good and uses that as a “springboard, as opposed to beginning with an end in mind.” Once in the kitchen, Scheck’s must-haves are a good silicone spatula and a good blender.
