‘How to Get Away With Murder’: Are Bonnie and Frank in Love, or Settling for Each Other?
In the final season of How to Get Away With Murder, Annalise Keating’s main partners, Bonnie Winterbottom and Frank Delfino have officially started dating. Some viewers believe their love may be more “pure” than any other on the show as the two cared for each other as friends before developing romantic feelings. On the other hand, many fans love the couple as “partners in crime” but aren’t here for a romantic relationship as they believe the two are only settling for each other.
Bonnie Winterbottom and Frank Delfino’s relationship
Annalise Keating’s (Viola Davis) closest associates already had a history before the show’s start as they continually help each other with difficult situations. Their relationship turned sexual after Frank Delfino (Charlie Weber) killed Bonnie Winterbottom’s (Liza Weil) abusive father but quickly soured after he ghosted her the following morning.
The lawyer eventually confessed her love for Frank, but he questioned her sincerity after she asked him to take the blame for the murders. In the third season, Frank turned his sights to Keating 5 member Laurel Castillo (Karla Souza) but moved in with Bonnie in the following season because the lawyer was afraid after she threatened District Attorney Todd Denver (Benito Martinez).
In the sixth season, Bonnie nursed Frank back to health after his violent encounter with Xavier Castillo (Gerardo Celasco). Later, the professional hitman revealed his feelings for the lawyer to Annalise before opening up to Bonnie after her car accident. Even though Bonnie initially pushed him away, the two are now in a relationship.
Some fans love Bonnie and Frank together
In a Reddit thread, fans debated if they thought the couple were genuinely in love or only settling for each other. One noted they “love” the two together because Frank cared for Bonnie as a friend before developing romantic feelings.
Additionally, the user stated the professional hitman seemingly “loves Bonnie more fully and purely than he ever did Laurel” and thinks the lawyer has moved on from Annalise as she knows the two will never end up together.
Some enjoyed it when the two first got together in the early seasons but now think it’s “lazy and desperate on both of their parts” because they seemingly just don’t want to be alone.
Many fans believe Bonnie and Frank are only ‘settling’ for each other
The majority of fans are convinced the couple is not truly in love and have only chosen each other out of convenience and fear of ending up alone. One fan doesn’t believe it’s love because the two are only together because they can’t be with the ones they truly fell for as Frank has always been in love with Laurel and Bonnie with Annalise.
Many pointed out that Bonnie is Frank’s second choice, and he would choose the former Keating 5 member over the lawyer. Another user thinks it’s “two equally effed up people finding each other” who care for one another and want to have a reason to keep fighting.
Additionally, they both know the terrible things each other has done, so it wouldn’t make sense for them to separate and attempt to find love elsewhere. Many feel “creeped out” by their halfhearted relationship as they pegged them more like siblings and “partners in crime” than romantic love interests.
They also think the show would have been stronger if the two hadn’t slept together. Even though Annalise didn’t approve of their union initially, she recently gave them her stamp of approval. Some fans believe she did this to make sure Frank would always protect Bonnie.
How to Get Away With Murder airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. EST on ABC.
