How to Watch the Billie Eilish Documentary: Where is ‘The World’s a Little Blurry’ Streaming?
Billie Eilish is the subject of the latest big music documentary on the scene, Billie Eilish: The Word’s a Little Blurry. The film has been positioned as something close to an event release, coming not long after Eilish’s debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, topped the charts in 2019 and made her an unlikely pop megastar.
With megastardom, naturally, comes a mega-fanbase, one that is likely eager to gobble up a documentary about Eilish. With that in mind, here’s what you need to know about where Billie Eilish: The Word’s a Little Blurry is streaming.
‘Billie Eilish: The Word’s a Little Blurry’ is now streaming
Directed by R.J. Cutler (If I Stay), Billie Eilish: The Word’s a Little Blurry began production in 2018, according to Vanity Fair, and was wrapped early last year. It chronicles Eilish’s young and eventful career in its entirety, beginning with early footage of the singer recording “Ocean Eyes,” the 2016 single that went viral on SoundCloud and put her on the road to success.
The doc was acquired by Apple in one of the company’s biggest moves to bolster its content of original films and series. The Hollywood Reporter claimed that the tech giant paid around $25 million for the project, but Eilish and her team have denied that number.
As an Apple original, Billie Eilish: The Word’s a Little Blurry is available to stream exclusively on Apple TV+. The fledgling service launched in late 2019 and has started to come into its own thanks to successful shows like Ted Lasso and Defending Jacob.
While this might seem unfortunate to the many viewers who exclusively subscribe to Netflix, Apple TV+ is among the cheapest of the major services right now at $4.99 a month. If you’ve bought a new Apple device in recent months, you might already have access to a free year of the service. It is also part of the various Apple One bundles, which include a number of other services including Apple Music, Apple Arcade, and Apple Fitness, at a discounted price.
‘The Word’s a Little Blurry’ has received critical acclaim
In addition to its streaming release through Apple, Billie Eilish: The Word’s a Little Blurry was also released in select theaters by film distributor, Neon. Releasing it just before the Feb. 28 cutoff for the 2021 Academy Awards, the studios involved might be hoping for the film to net a Best Documentary nomination
The chances of that might be good, given the strong critical reaction it’s had so far. It currently boasts a 97% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 61 reviews.
“Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry offers an enlightening — and sometimes uncomfortable — look behind the scenes of a young star’s ascension,” the site’s consensus statement reads.
It is the third music documentary that Apple has released, trading on its history as a major music distributor to generate synergy with Apple Music. The first two were 2020’s Beastie Boys Story and Bruce Springsteen’s Letter to You.
