Hudson Yang Visited Alaska Before ‘Fresh Off the Boat’ Season 6
Fresh Off the Boat will return for a sixth season on ABC this fall, so the kids who play the Huang boys have been enjoying their summer vacation before they go back to work this week. Ian Chen, Forrest Wheeler and Hudson Yang were at ABC’s party for the Television Critics Association and Yang told us all about his summer vacation.
Yang plays Eddie Huang, the original basis for Fresh Off the Boat detailing his childhood with his immigrant parents in the ‘90s. Fresh Off the Boat has taken on a life of its own and season six will premiere Friday, September 27. Until then, find out what Yang has been up to this summer.
Summer is when Hudson Yang can be a normal kid
Since Hudson Yang films 22 episodes of Fresh Off the Boat during the year, he doesn’t always go to school every day or play Little League on weekends. He uses his summer to travel and hit three major spots this summer.
“During the summer or when I’m not working, I actually do try to step back and be more like a normal kid, have a normal summer, have a normal life,” Yang said. “I did a lot of traveling, getting away. I went to Alaska, I toured around Toronto and Nevada.”
Alaska was his dream vacation.
“I don’t know, it’s just been on my bucket list,” Yang said. “It’s something I just want to do. I went salmon fishing. That’s like my dream. I love fishing.”
Hudson Yang is a junior in high school now
Kids grow up so fast. For high school, Hudson Yang has found a school that suits him while he works on Fresh Off the Boat.
“I’m going to be a junior,” Yang said. “High school’s a great experience. I haven’t really had a normal school experience since sixth grade as well, because I’ve been doing online schools or traveling. Finally, I’m going to a good school I like now, New West Charter.”
What makes New West Charter so good?
“The teachers are really good,” Yang said. “They’ve been helping prepare me for college and all that stuff so I’m just really happy. And it works for my schedule.”
Hudson Yang doesn’t know what ‘Fresh Off the Boat’ Season 6 is about yet
Hudson Yang can only glean vague clues about what’s in store for him this season on Fresh Off the Boat. He won’t know for sure until he starts reading the scripts.
“I know a little bit just because of my fittings and stuff, but really we don’t know,” Yang said. “We start August 12th though and it should be coming out in late October.”
1/3 of Hudson Yang’s life has been on ‘Fresh Off the Boat’
When Fresh Off the Boat began, Hudson Yang couldn’t imagine he’d be thinking about college while still making the show. Now he can look back on grades 6-11 on the show.
“It’s crazy,” Yang said. “Just last season, we broke 100 episodes. That’s like 2200 hours of footage, right? It’s ridiculous. I can’t even imagine. It’s crazy.”
‘Fresh Off the Boat’ has grown up with Hudson Yang
Every year, Fresh Off the Boat can adapt to Hudson Yang and his costars as they grow up. Sometimes Eddie Huang has a more active social like than Yang does in real life.
“As we all age, the writes kind of write in little jokes,” Yang said. “They kind of write it to us. I had a girlfriend on the show before I had a girlfriend in real life. I still don’t have a girlfriend.”
