Hunter Schafer Revealed Which Music Legend Would Be Her Dream Artist to Make a Song For ‘Euphoria’
HBO‘s hit series Euphoria has emerged as one of the leading shows involving Gen Z high schoolers today. In addition to its gripping storylines, Euphoria is also known for its stellar soundtrack.
‘Euphoria’ has featured original songs before
The Euphoria soundtrack contains a mixture of contemporary pop and hip-hop songs and older songs to balance them out. The soundtrack is handled by British singer-songwriter Labrinth.
Labrinth reflected on joining the show and being approached by showrunner Sam Levinson to bring the music to life in a 2019 interview with Rolling Stone. “At the time, [Levinson] was like, ‘Lab, I wanna make a score that has hip-hop influence, has gospel-orchestral influence,’ like the soundtrack for Edward Scissorhands. A lot of what was happening on the score was kind of naturally what I do,” he remembered. “It wasn’t like he didn’t want me there, but he was kind of like, ‘When I listen to the music off your album, [it’s] exactly what I wanna hear. You’re already going in the right direction. You don’t need any inspiration apart from watching the visual.'”
Euphoria has also featured original music in the past. Season 1 of the show famously concluded with a musical number to the song “All For Us,” performed by lead actor Zendaya. And in 2021, Billie Eilish and Rosalía released “Lo Vas a Olvidar” (“You’ll Forget It”) for Schafer’s one-off special episode about her character Jules.
Hunter Schafer wishes Nina Simone could make a song for ‘Euphoria’
Season 2 of Euphoria has been on hold since the start of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and fans of the show are eager for its return. In January 2021, Schafer took over Euphoria‘s official Twitter account to answer fan questions. One of them asked her who her dream artist would be to create a song for the show.
“I would have to say, if we could have any artist make a song for Euphoria, Nina Simone,” she said honestly. “If she was still here, Nina Simone.”
Nina Simone’s legacy lives on today
Nina Simone was a legendary singer and pianist who first achieved international attention for her soulful blues music. In the 1960s, she achieved greater recognition for her work as a civil rights activist and musician, with hit songs such as “To Be Young, Gifted, and Black” and “Mississippi Godd–n.” She also recorded a timeless cover of the song “Strange Fruit,” first popularized by Billie Holiday, which called out the culture of lynching and hatred in the American South.
Simone died in 2003, and her birth home in Tryon, North Carolina is open to visitors today. In 2015, her life was the subject of not one, but two documentaries: What Happened, Miss Simone? and The Amazing Nina Simone, both of which were created with input from her family. The following year, Zoe Saldaña starred in the controversial biopic Nina.
