If Charlie Cox Can’t Play Daredevil in the MCU, Fans Know Who Could
There may be no more opinionated fan base than those who make up the Marvel Cinematic Universe fandom.
While the viewers certainly love the MCU and its continued efforts to bring them new material year after year, they also have some very specific thoughts on how the creative decisions for the franchise should play out. Often, these opinions take the form of preferences — and sometimes outright demands — for casting decisions.
Whether fans are trying to shoehorn in their favorite A-lister or beg for someone unknown to get a shot at a key role, casting is a frequent place for fan debates and wish lists.
Now fans are voicing their opinion about the casting of Daredevil, and if it can’t be Charlie Cox, fans want it known that there is another option.
The MCU is in the middle of a transition
The MCU did not become one of the most financially successful film franchises imaginable — and astoundingly quickly — without a plan. They have been steadily rolling out their material in “phases” that have each had their own distinctive features.
The early phases used each of the films in the Avengers series to act as bridges between the other films and shows, which often focused more attention on a specific character rather than an ensemble cast.
Now, though, the Avengers series has come to an end, and the MCU is in a period of transition. With Avengers: Endgame, Phase 3 has essentially wrapped up, and now fans are anxiously awaiting new material in Phase 4 with plans mapped out into at least Phase 5.
The biggest distinction for this era of the MCU is that it will likely focus more on smaller teams of characters coalescing around one another. Notably, these newer phases will also likely usher in a new generation of superheroes.
Daredevil was a fan favorite before cancellation
One of the projects for the MCU was a Netflix series titled Daredevil. As one might expect, the show focused on Daredevil (AKA Matt Murdock), who was portrayed by actor Charlie Cox. Cox joined fans in being shocked and dismayed when the popular series was canceled abruptly in late 2018. The show only had a three-season run, and many fans protested that it simply was not enough.
Apparently Cox thought the show was slated for at least two more seasons, and other creators working on the show were also surprised to hear about its sudden end.
Some hinted that “politics” had brought the series down, but the most likely scenario is that Marvel’s relationship with Disney+ was the source of the disruption. Since then, fans have been anxiously awaiting news for when Daredevil will reappear in the MCU.
Fans want Charlie Cox to return
The most obvious casting choice for Daredevil if and when the character returns to the MCU is obvious: Charlie Cox. If Cox can’t reprise the role, some fans would rather his character didn’t return at all. For them, Cox’s performance is so tied up in their association with the character that anything else would just feel inadequate.
Not everyone is convinced that the reaction needs to be that extreme, however. Sure, getting Cox back would be a great win, but if Cox is tied up in other projects or the casting doesn’t work out for some reason, there are other options on the table.
According to Screen Rant, some fans have been pushing hard for Matt Bomer to take on the part. Bomer seems to have a charismatic combination of athleticism and intelligence that would make him a convincing Daredevil, and fans are ready to see it happen.
