Inside the Settlement Details of Monica’s Divorce from Ex NBA Player, Shannon Brown
Fans were saddened to hear that Monica had filed for divorce from her husband of eight years, former Laker player Shannon Brown. The two seemed like a match made in heaven after Monica’s long road to finding “the one.” Many watched her sing her way through heartbreak and battle it out all in the name of love with songs like “The Boy Is Mine,” but her songs of heartache quickly turned to songs of deep love when she married Brown and became a basketball wife. The two went on to raise their blended family.
While Monica has remained pretty tight-lipped about what led to their divorce out of respect for their family, details of the settlement have been released.
Monica’s marriage to Shannon Brown
After a 10 year relationship with the father of her two sons, producer Rocko, Monica took a break from dating to focus on her family. She was soon surprised to find love in an unsuspecting love interest. Monica met Brown on the set of her music video, “Love All Over Me,” where Brown starred as her leading man. Their on-screen chemistry transferred off-set and the two began to date.
Their romance happened quickly. The two dated about 6 months and Monica solidified her love for her new beau by getting a tattoo of Brown’s name on her wrist. She was soon spotted with a 10-carat diamond, leading many to speculate they were engaged. She had a secret ceremony in 2010 before having a larger one a year later. They blended their family with Monica’s two sons, Shannon’s son from a past relationship and they welcomed a daughter, Laiya Shannon Brown, three years into their union.
Monica gushed over her new husband and traveled with him city to city during away games when she was on break from touring. Brown returned the favor and supported Monica on the road as well. All seemed blissful in the Brown household.
Monica files for divorce from Shannon Brown after rumors of infidelity
Monica filed for divorce from Brown after eight years of marriage in March 2019 citing “irreconcilable differences.” Prior to the filing, Monica hadn’t been seen with her wedding ring for about a month nor had they been photographed together for some time.
Celebrity divorces can get messy but Monica took the high road and refused to trash talk her soon to be ex in the media. She did open up to Ru Paul during an interview and maintained that she’d always be a champion for Brown, telling Paul:
“No matter what happens, he will always get my absolute respect, gratitude and also my assistance in being a part of whatever his life becomes. He’s an athlete. Everything that he does, I’ll be there to support because that’s what I vowed to do, even when the other side of it does not work.”
The RuPaul Show
Though Monica remained amicable, rumors spread for a year or so that Brown was unfaithful, something Monica denied. When Monica released her 2019 single “Commitment” in which she sang about needing complete fidelity in her union, fans assumed it was directed towards Brown.
What Monica and Shannon Brown received from their divorce settlements?
Monica and Brown’s divorce was swift. People Magazine reported that the divorce was final just last week and that the only request from Monica was to return to her maiden name. Initially, the details of the divorce were to be kept confidential, with neither parties being able to speak publicly.
The Jasmine Brand exclusively revealed details of the divorce settlement. According to the legal paperwork, Brown received their shared marital property and is responsible for paying the mortgage, property taxes, insurance, utilities and all upkeep expenses for the Georgia mansion. Monica will maintain primary custody of their children and receive all luxury vehicles, which include a 2018 Maybach Mercedes and 2016 Range Rover. Monica will have 6 months to relocate from their marital home.
Neither Monica nor Brown will receive alimony, separate maintenance or spousal support of any kind from each other. Hopefully, they will continue to remain friendly and co-parent.
