Social media followers of A-lister Kerry Washington are probably familiar with her dad Earl Washington. Many of the star’s posts showcase her father’s likability, swagger, and wit. And based on the Instagram comments, fans can’t get enough of Washington’s daddy-o.
Kerry Washington’s dad has a knack for comedy
Washington has been on the promotional circuit for her new film The Fight. Rather than owning the spotlight, Washington worked behind the scenes as a producer on the project. While making the talk show rounds, the entertainer appeared on Good Morning America. During her interview, she took a moment to recognize her dad, who had recently captivated his daughter’s Instagram followers with a particular social media post.
“He’s just… My dad’s the best. He has the most amazing sense of humor. And you know, when you’re a kid, it’s embarrassing and then when you become an adult, it’s like, so special,” Washington gushed on GMA.

The Scandal actor may be the more recognizable member of the family. But her father recently garnered attention by starring in a witty Instagram video, which Washington posted to her account. The senior Washington has racked up background acting gigs in projects alongside his famous daughter. In light of the recent Emmy Award nods, he decided to thank the Academy for recognizing his artful performances.
“He’s the best. I have a post right now, my dad was a background actor in both Little Fires [Everywhere] and Live in Front of a Studio Audience, which have both been nominated for Emmys. So he did a post on my social thanking the Academy for celebrating his background acting in both of those shows,” explained Washington on GMA.
The elder Washington stole the show with his witty Instagram post
Washington posted her dad’s video message on Instagram, and the Internet exploded with positive reactions. “A message from [two-time] Emmy Nominee: Featured Background Artist…Earl Washington,” the proud daughter wrote in the caption.
“It is an honor to be a background featured artist. Thank you to the Academy for nominating both of my shows. My work in Live in Front of a Studio Audience and Little Fires is stellar. I feel that it was probably some of my best work,” said Washington in his tongue-in-cheek video.
The follower comments rolled in from everyday fans as well as Hollywood players who dig the video message.
“Kerry, I can’t, he is wonderful,” commented comedy ace, Mindy Kaling.
“Earl deserves all the awards,” Scandal production house ShondaLand wrote.
“That’s a handsome man right there. And smart. So smart. Listen to him KDubs, for he will never tell you a lie. Especially about former co-stars,” quipped Scandal alum Scott Foley.

As much as fans and followers adore Papa Washington, no one can top his daughter’s admiration. Washington’s Father’s Day post praising her dad’s sense of humor was enough to give us a serious case of the warm and fuzzies.

Happy Father’s Day to the best featured background artist in town, the life of every party, and the king of dad jokes,” Washington wrote, “I’m so blessed to have him as my dad. Wishing all the fathers (in any form that they come in) out there an amazing day.”
