From ‘Into the Woods’ to ‘Hamilton,’ Here Are Some of the Musicals Coming to Disney+ in 2020
Disney and musical theater — it can’t get better than that. Thanks to this streaming platform, fans will have the “best seat in the house” for a live recording of Hamilton, although there are a few other productions available for binge-watching on this streaming service. Here’s what we know about movie musicals and live stage recordings, available on Disney+.
‘Hamilton’ joins the Disney+ streaming library during 2020
They’re not gonna give up their shot. Although the live recording of Hamilton featuring the original Broadway cast was slated for a December 2020 debut, the film has since been moved up to July 2020.
This production puts viewers right in the theatre, giving them the “best seat in the house” for this Tony Award-winning production. According to the Disney+ Instagram account, Hamiton will be available for streaming beginning on July 3.
“I’m so proud of how beautifully Tommy Kail has brought Hamilton to the screen. He’s given everyone who watches this film the best seat in the house,” Lin-Manuel Miranda said in a statement. The writer stars as Alexander Hamilton in this upcoming stage production.
“I’m so grateful to Disney and Disney+ for reimagining and moving up our release to July 4 weekend of this year, in light of the world turning upside down,” he continued. “I’m so grateful to all the fans who asked for this, and I’m so glad that we’re able to make it happen. I’m so proud of this show. I can’t wait for you to see it.”
Disney’s version of ‘Into the Woods’ will also be added to the Disney+ library
Although this was originally a stage production, Disney released their movie adaptation of Into the Woods in 2014. The movie featured actors like Meryl Streep, James Corden, and Emily Blunt, prompting some Disney fans to wonder when it would be available on the company’s streaming platform.
Due to “existing agreements,” Into the Woods will join the Disney+ streaming library on December 4, 2020. This date is subject to change, however, as many of the movies slated for their Disney+ debut have been released early.
Some musicals, including ‘Newsies’ and ‘Sister Act,’ are already available for streaming on this platform
There are already a number of movie musicals available on this streaming platform. That, of course, includes adaptations of Sister Act, Newsies, and Mary Poppins. There’s also Disney-created musicals like Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and the live-action and animated versions of The Lion King.
Potentially, other musicals joining the streaming platform, although nothing has been confirmed by Disney. There’s the West End’s production of Aladdin, which Disney recorded live pre-coronavirus closures, according to TechRadar. There was also the live-streamed Celebrating 25 Magical Years of Disney on Broadway concert, which could make its Disney+ debut in the coming months.
