‘Abbott Elementary’ returns from hiatus tonight, on Tuesday, March 22
Episode 10 of the ABC comedy didn’t air in its usual 9 p.m. EST time slot on Tuesday, March 1, 2022, due to coverage of the annual State of the Union address.
The show then went on hiatus for an additional two weeks, giving it a return date of tonight, Tuesday, March 22, 2022. Creator, writer, executive producer, and star of the series, Quinta Brunson, announced the break in a tweet following episode 9’s premiere.
She thanked the viewers for tuning in and revealed the gap, along with a behind-the-scenes picture of the children who act as her students in the mockumentary leaving for the day.
Many new fans were able to catch up on the aired episodes throughout the hiatus, while current viewers expressed how much they missed the show on social media.
‘Abbott Elementary’ Season 1 Episode 9, ‘Step Class’ recap
Titled “Step Class,” the most recent episode included second-grade teacher Janine Teagues (Quinta Brunson) and her after-school step class.
Noting how much she enjoyed growing it up, Janine was excited to teach the group a dance to perform in front of the other students.
When principal Ava Coleman (Janelle James) found out about the program, she intervened, pointing out her previous success as a stepper. The students expressed a preference for Ava’s routine, so Janine allowed her to change it against the advice of the other teachers.
They were almost proven right when the principal disappeared right before the performance, but Ava left to tend to her mother, for whom she has stepped in as a caretaker. Additionally, substitute teacher Gregory (Tyler James Williams) feels left out and begins eating lunch alone in his car after the other faculty discover his distaste for pizza.

According to IMDb’s description of “Open House,” tonight’s episode follows Janine as she gets ready to meet with a students’ mother during their annual open house. On the other hand, the other teachers take the time to relax.
As already explained, Gregory accepted a substitute job at Abbott Elementary after not receiving the position he initially applied for, the school principal.
Instead, it went to Ava, who blackmailed her way into the profession, admitting, “I needed a job.” During “Open House,” Gregory apparently discovers how Ava received the position, shocking him. Finally, the daughter of respected veteran kindergarten teacher Barbara Howard (Sheryl Lee Ralph) visits, but it ends up wreaking havoc.
The show doesn’t appear to have another scheduled break following the hiatus; therefore, episode 11’s “Desking” should air next Tuesday on March 29, episode 12’s “Ava vs. Superintendent” on April 5, and the finale, episode 13, “Zoo Balloon” on April 12. Abbott Elementary airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on ABC.
