Among the most popular actors from the series is Nick Gehlfuss, who portrays Will Halstead on Chicago Med. Nick Gehlfuss had several small TV roles
Before landing such an important role on Chicago Med, Gehlfuss had several small television roles that helped establish his career. His acting career started in 2009, and he took on small one-time parts in shows like Army Wives, The Good Wife, The Wingman, and Blue Bloods, according to IMDb. His first recurring part occurred in 2013 as Ross Kessler in the series The Newsroom. He followed that multi-episode arc with a substantial guest role in Shameless in 2014.
That’s when Gehlfuss got his big break. In 2015, he was cast as Will Halstead on the backdoor pilot episode of Chicago Fire. Will, who was a doctor in Sudan before moving to New York, had relocated to Chicago after being fired from his position as a plastic surgeon for unstated reasons. His first day on the job started out rocky, and he almost quit, but he decided to stay and make a real go of it in Chicago. Along the way, he became a major part of the Chicago Med cast.
Nick Gehlfuss had a surprise marriage
Back in 2016, just as he was really gaining star status from his role on the show, Gehlfuss revealed that he had recently gotten married to his girlfriend Lilian Matsuda, as reported by People. The pair were married in an Ohio ceremony. Gehlfuss reflected on the odd circumstances of the day and how it ended up being perfect for the pair: “It rained that day in the morning, which is good luck. And then it was perfect after that. And it was on Friday the 13th, and the next day it dropped twenty degrees and then Sunday, blizzard, snowing on the way here.”
He wanted to invite his castmates to the ceremony, but the sprawling cast that reaches across three different shows made it an impossible guest list to accommodate. “I started on P.D. and I went to Fire, and now with Justice, it would have been crazy,” Gehlfuss explained.

While he may not have been able to invite all of his fellow cast members to the wedding, Gehlfuss didn’t get much time away from work for the big day. He spent part of his honeymoon promoting the show. It sounds like Matsuda was more than happy to support his career in this way, and Gehlfuss promised a more focused honeymoon later.
After all, Matsuda had been a huge support for Gehlfuss while he got his career off the ground. According to The Detroit News, Matsuda was working in hotel management when the pair got together, and she helped Gehlfuss financially while he struggled through the early days of his acting career. She was also willing to follow him to Los Angeles and then to Chicago. Gehlfuss credits her support and consistency with his success today, and it appears that the pair have really worked together to build an impressive life.
