Is Disney Planning on Giving Elsa a Girlfriend in ‘Frozen 3’?
Elsa and the gang will be returning for Frozen 2 next month, their first appearance on the silver screens since the original made waves around the world. With Elsa becoming an inspiration for the LGBTQ community, fans were hoping that Disney would give her a girlfriend in the highly anticipated sequel. Unfortunately, that is not going to happen as the movie will not feature a love interest for the snow queen. But will Disney introduce Elsa’s girlfriend in Frozen 3?
Elsa gets a girlfriend
In the first movie, Elsa’s sister, Anna, got all of the romance, leaving some fans to speculate that the snow queen is actually gay. Although Disney is not introducing a female love interest for Elsa in Frozen 2, inside sources claim that it will happen in the third film.
According to We Got This Covered, Disney is waiting to give Elsa a girlfriend until the third movie because they think the sequel is too soon. The studio thought that some areas of the world would ban the film if they introduced a love interest for Elsa, so they pushed it back to the next project.
Disney, of course, has not said anything about a third Frozen as continuing the franchise will largely depend on the success of the next film. That said, there is little doubt that Frozen 2 will be a huge hit in the box office.
But even if Disney moves forward with a third movie, it might be a long time before we see Elsa find love. There were six years between the first and second films, and Disney will likely wait the same amount of time before producing another movie in the franchise.
What about those Evan Rachel Wood rumors?
In 2018, rumors surfaced that Disney was planning on bringing Evan Rachel Wood in to voice Elsa’s love interest in the sequel.
While Wood is playing the part of Queen Iduna in Frozen 2, her character will not be sparking up a romance with Elsa — at least not yet.
Instead, the movie will dive into Elsa’s backstory and explore a new part of the magical world. It is unclear if the film will address Elsa’s sexuality, though it sounds like Disney is steering clear of that for the moment.
Idina Menzel is returning as the voice of Elsa, while Kristen Bell is reprising her part as Anna. Other voice actors include Josh Gad (Olaf), Jonathan Groff (Kristoff), Sterling K. Brown, Santino Fontana (Hans), and Alfred Molina.
‘Frozen’ creators dish on the sequel
Although a Frozen sequel seems like a no-brainer for fans, the filmmakers behind the original never really planned for another movie in the hit franchise.
In an interview with io9, director Jennifer Lee revealed that they did not discuss a Frozen sequel until only recently. When they did approach Disney about doing a sequel, they only had a rough idea of where the story would go next.
“We hadn’t been talking about [a sequel] at all,” Lee shared. “[But] by the time we started talking about it all we had to say was ‘We actually have an idea for Frozen…’”
Lee added that Disney immediately jumped on board with the project, even though they knew nothing about it. So Lee and co-creator Chris Buck got together with their writers and started hashing out ideas, eventually coming up with a compelling story for Frozen 2.
Disney drops ‘Frozen 2’ trailer
A month ahead of the premiere, Disney offered fans a first look at Elsa and Anna returning to action in a new Frozen 2 trailer. The clip includes a new song from the upcoming film, titled “Into the Unknown.”
The trailer also sets the stage for the plot of the sequel, which sees Elsa and Anna venturing into the unknown world to uncover secrets about their family.
In addition to the video, Disney recently released the entire tracklist for the movie, and it looks like we are in for another amazing soundtrack.
Some of the song titles include, “All is Found,” “When I Am Older,” “Lost in the Woods,” “The Next Right Thing,” and “Show Yourself.”
The main cast will be featured heavily in the tracks, but there are also a few surprises guest singers in the mix. This includes cameos by Panic! At The Disco, Weezer, Kacey Musgraves, and AURORA.
Frozen 2 is scheduled to premiere in theaters on November 22, 2019.
