Is ‘Joker’ Actor Joaquin Phoenix Married?
Joaquin Phoenix is one of Hollywood’s most fame-averse stars, even if he has three or four films out in the same year. Because of his leading role in Joker, the 44-year-old has had to step into the spotlight, prompting questions about his creative process, acting roles, and his personal life.
With this renewed interest in Phoenix, fans are curious about whether the actor is married or dating. Here’s what we know.
Phoenix has never been married
In the past, Phoenix has been linked to Liv Tyler, whom he dated in the late ‘90s for three years, as well as actresses Jessica Joffe and Amelia Warner (who’s now married to Jamie Dornan).
From 2001 to 2005, he dated model Topaz Page-Green, and supported her work at the charity she founded, The Lunchbox Fund. According to Elle, Page-Green is still friends with Phoenix and his family.
By 2013, Phoenix was seen out and about with DJ Allie Teilz, whom he’d met while clubbing in Hollywood, E! News reported. But since 2017, he’s been in a relationship with someone else.
Phoenix is dating a fellow actress
It seems like a match made in low-key heaven, because Phoenix and actress Rooney Mara have been together since filming Mary Magdalene in 2017. 34-year-old Mara has starred in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Lion, and 2015’s Pan. Besides filming Mary Magdalene, she and Phoenix have also been in Her and Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot as co-stars.
Rumors about their romance first started flying when they were spotted hanging out on a balcony in Italy while filming Mary Magdalene. They went public as a couple during the Cannes Film Festival that year, walking the red carpet and sharing an embrace.
Phoenix told T Magazine that the two were friends long before he signed on to play Jesus in Mary Magdalene. During the candid 2017 interview, he also shared that he and Mara live together in Hollywood Hills, and spend much of their time as homebodies, exercising, chilling, and enjoying Netflix documentaries.
They’re not always at home though, as the pair regularly participate in activism events for animal rights and are vegans. Additionally, they both work with charitable organizations that address childhood poverty and food insecurity.
Fans believe Phoenix and Mara are engaged
Earlier this year, E! shared a photo of Mara wearing a diamond ring on her left hand, leading many to believe that the two stars are engaged. Phoenix was on the carpet last month at the Venice Film Festival to promote Joker, and Mara was at his side. Again, eagle-eyed media outlets and fans saw her sporting the large ring on her finger.
But there was one major clue Phoenix dropped about his love for the actress during an awards ceremony at the Toronto International Film Festival. While giving an acceptance speech, The Cut reports he hailed up his lady love with these warm words:
“One last thing, somewhere here, I don’t know where, is a filthy dragon, and I want to rip its wings off and fasten a blanket and sleep with it forever. I love you. Thank you.”
Neither Phoenix nor Mara have been married before, so if the rumors are true, this would be a first marriage for both. Perhaps fans will witness a love-filled union between a clown and a dragon.
