At the end of July, Taylor Swift surprised fans with the digital release of her eighth studio album, folklore.
Fans who ordered a physical copy are eagerly waiting for its arrival on August 7. The physical album contains a bonus track, “The Lakes” — a song many fans think will reveal a huge announcement regarding Swift’s relationship with Joe Alwyn.
‘folklore’ came as a huge surprise for fans
On July 23, 2020, Swift shocked fans by announcing a new album less than a year after the release of Lover.
“Most of the things I had planned this summer didn’t end up happening, but there is something I hadn’t planned on that DID happen,” Swift shared on Instagram. “And that thing is my 8th studio album, folklore. Surprise. Tonight at midnight, I’ll be releasing my entire brand new album of songs I’ve poured all of my whims, dreams, fears, and musings into.”
‘The Lakes’ is a mystery to Taylor Swift fans
Currently, fans know very little about the bonus track. A few lyrics are on Genius Lyrics, but Swift has not confirmed any of them yet.
What is known about “The Lakes” comes from The National’s Aaron Dessner, who told Vulture folklore is Swift’s “goth record.”
“That’s a Jack song,” he explained, referring to Swift’s long-time friend and collaborator Jack Antonoff. “It’s a beautiful kind of garden, or like you’re lost in a beautiful garden. There’s a kind of Greek poetry to it. Tragic poetry, I guess.”
Some fans think ‘The Lakes’ will be a pregnancy annoucement
On August 7, fans will finally understand the meaning behind “The Lakes.”
As one fan on TikTok pointed out, “The Lakes” could be Swift’s way of announcing her engagement to Alwyn — or possibly her pregnancy.
According to one fan on TikTok, Swift might announce she is either getting married or already married to Alwyn. “OK Taylor Swift fans, my friend and I just discovered possibly the biggest Easter Egg in the folklore album,” the TiKTok user said.
They continued:
In ‘Invisible String,’ she says that they got lunch ‘down by the lakes.’ The day we’re going to be able to hear ‘The Lakes’ is August 7. And I know what you’re thinking — there’s a song called ‘August’ and there’s a song called ‘Seven.’
Basically, August 7, we’re going to be able to hear some really big announcement in the song or a big announcement is going to happen August 7. I think Taylor’s getting married to Joe or maybe she’s already married and she’s going to announce it then or maybe she’s pregnant…
Other fans have found possible hints to Swift’s pregnancy in other songs like “Peace.”
“Taylor, are you pregnant?” another fan asked on Twitter. “What are these words in a song ‘Peace?’ Your eyes are blue like ocean, Your brother is my brother, You are the family, I will give you the child… Please [tell] us, please — you can’t keep that secret.”

Swift has been in a relationship with Alwyn for some time now. While an engagement or their marriage seems more likely, Swift being pregnant is not entirely impossible.
Fans will have to wait until August 7 to find out what news — if any — Swift has to share.
