When Thanos collected all six Infinity Stones and wielded their power to snap away half of all life in the universe, things forever changed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movies and the TV shows are still in the process of exploring what happened after the snap, but one thing may be clear to Marvel fans. In a way, it is almost entirely Loki’s fault that the snap even happened in the first place. This theory doesn’t really have to do with the fact that Loki and Thanos actually worked together before, but rather that Loki, in a way, allowed Thanos to succeed in the first place. Here’s a look at exactly why some Marvel fans are saying that it’s Loki’s fault that the snap happened.

Thanos was scared of Odin

While Thanos is undoubtedly a skilled and powerful fighter, his power mainly came from two things: the Infinity Stones and his army. Without them, Thanos wasn’t that powerful, and like some Marvel fans on Reddit talked about, he would’ve probably had a tough time fighting against many other characters.

One of those characters that Thanos would probably have trouble against was Odin, who watched over and protected the Nine Realms. Not only was Odin a great fighter and the king of a powerful army, but he also had a vault of treasures, and one of those treasures was an Infinity Stone.

So, it’s fair to say that, if Thanos didn’t have any Infinity Stones, Odin, Thor, and their army would’ve demolished Thanos. Fortunately for Thanos however, Loki removed Odin from the equation.

How Loki allowed Thanos to succeed

In The Dark World, after the dark elves are defeated, it’s revealed that Odin was actually Loki. In Ragnarok, it’s explained that Loki had cast a spell on Odin and it caused him to be sent to Earth. Loki, meanwhile, posed as Odin on Asgard, where he could enjoy being king, just like he always wanted.

What Loki didn’t know, however, was that by banishing Odin, Loki had inadvertently allowed Thanos’ plan to succeed. Nidavellir was a part of the Nine Realms that Odin watched over, and it was also the home of the dwarves. Without Odin’s protection, Thanos went to Nidavellir and forced Eitri, who was played by Peter Dinklage, to forge for him the Infinity Gauntlet.

Without the gauntlet, the stones couldn’t have been used, according to Marvel fans. And of course, if Loki hadn’t kicked Odin out, then he and his army may have been able to stop Thanos in his tracks.

While this is just a theory, there is some truth to it since, according to Marvel fans, Thanos definitely did create the Infinity Gauntlet sometime between The Dark World and Ragnarok. As such, like one Marvel fan said, “If that were true then it would mean Loki was directly responsible for the gauntlet’s creation. And all so he could sit on his ass eating grapes in his home town.”

It’s currently not clear what Loki will be about, but many fans think that the show will portray Loki in a more positive light. After all, he made an attempt to kill Thanos at the beginning of Infinity War, and he seemingly did it to try to save his brother. As such, Loki may, in the show, be forced to come face to face with the consequences of his actions.

He may feel regretful that he inadvertently allowed the snap to happen, and that may be a powerful moment for him. He may even try to redeem himself by doing some good deeds. But of course, this was just a theory, and Loki may not think he was responsible for anything, to begin with.
