Jack Gleeson Leaves Retirement After ‘Game of Thrones’ to Appear in ‘Out of Her Mind’
There were many villains on Game of Thrones but one of the most-hated was King Joffrey played by Jack Gleeson. It’s been years since he played the role and he’s been living a private life since then because he decided to retire. Now he’s back and his new project sounds very different from the fantasy hit.
Jack Gleeson retired after ‘Game of Thrones’
Gleeson played one of the most iconic characters on the show, King Joffrey. However, he wouldn’t read the full scripts while working on it so a lot of it was a mystery to him.
“There’s too much to catch up on. I haven’t a clue what’s going on there,” Gleeson admitted at New York Comic Con, according to MTV News. “It’s crazy. In my mind, all these characters are still alive, and everyone’s in this place, and those people are in that place, and they have these motivations — and now everything has been screwed around so much. It’s a completely different show.”
He decided to leave acting when his story came to an end in 2014. The actor gave a simple reason for his decision.
“The answer isn’t interesting or long-winded,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “I’ve been acting since age 8. I just stopped enjoying it as much as I used to. And now there’s the prospect of doing it for a living, whereas up until now it was always something I did for recreation with my friends, or in the summer for some fun.”
He continued, “I enjoyed it. When you make a living from something, it changes your relationship with it. It’s not like I hate it, it’s just not what I want to do.”
He reunited with the cast at the premiere of the final season
The Irish actor went on to live a more private life after his time on the show ended. However, he did reunite with the cast for the final season’s premiere in 2019.
Sophie Turner, who played Sansa Stark, took a picture with her arms around Gleeson. This was fitting given their characters were supposed to get married.
Turner’s date to the premiere was her fiancé, Joe Jonas. He was also in the picture looking confused and wrote in the caption on Instagram, “WTF I thought this dude was dead… #KingJoffrey.”
He will be in a comedy called ‘Out of Her Mind’
The actor is going to be in a different drama by appearing in a six-part comedy called Out of Her Mind. It will be available on BBC Two.
Sara Pascoe wrote and will star in the series. “Out of Her Mind is a direct expression of my mind. We’ve turned my brain into a theme-park, and everyone’s invited! The cast are INCREDIBLE and I can’t wait for people to see what we’ve made,” she said in a statement.
The story will explore surviving family and heartbreak. The sitcom will also have some animation.
The rest of the cast includes Juliet Stevenson, Fiona Button, Cariad Lloyd, Adrian Edmonson, Navin Chowdhry, Sean Gilder, Tom Stuart, Scroobius Pip, Jumayn Hunter, Sheila Reid, Cash Holland, Lorraine Ashbourne and Cian Barry.
