Jada Pinkett Smith Advised Husband Will Smith on This Important Career Move: ‘Boy Don’t Embarrass Me’
The Smith family — Will, Jada Pinkett, Jaden, Willow, and Trey — are unapologetically themselves in every way possible. Though Will and Jada’s marriage has been the subject of public opinion for years, they’ve made one clear: they don’t care what anyone thinks. Jada even advises Will on a controversial part of his career — and he’s here for it.
The secret to Will and Jada Pinkett Smith’s 22-year marriage
Since 1997, Will and Jada Smith have an unorthodox romance. The couple’s honesty about marriage, parenting, and those “entanglement” headlines have captivated even the most reluctant Smith family fans.
Thanks to Jada’s Facebook Watch series Red Table Talk, otherwise secret pieces of the Smith’s have come to light. Now, more than ever, fans have the chance to get to know who Will and Jada are, and how their relationship has lasted over two decades.
In a 2019 interview with The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jada explained how Red Table Talk came about and why it matters in the context of her marriage.
“It was really to kind of get rid of the idea that people in the public eye have perfect relationships,” she said. “We were kind of sick of living up to that.”
One way the duo keeps things fresh is the most obvious. According to a candid interview roundup via Huffington Post, Jada and Will have an active sex life and they’re not ashamed to shout it to the rooftops. She even attributes the act to her glowing skin.
Red Table Talk opened the portal for Will and Jada to talk openly about a lot of things — including industry crushes.
“I’m not the kind of woman that believes that a man is not gonna be attracted to other women. I’m just not that girl. It’s just not realistic,” Jada said in 2015 on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM radio show (via The Hollywood Reporter). “Just because your man is attracted to another woman does not mean he doesn’t love you.”
She continued: “I trust that the man that Will is is a man of integrity. He’s got all the freedom in the world, and as long as Will can look himself in the mirror and be OK, I’m good.”
That perspective may not jibe with some but for Will and Jada, it keeps their relationship real.
Jada Pinkett Smith’s unconventional advice for husband Will
All the unconventional rules Will and Jada put into their relationship came full force when talks of Will’s sex scenes with Focus co-star Margot Robbie came about.
“After 20 years… I actually, you know…” Jada told Extra as Will chimed in, saying, “She a little freaky like that.”
Jada continued: “Unfortunately, he’s right. It’s kind of a nice voyeuristic way to see your man, but I am kind of weird in that way. That’s a whole other conversation.”
You’d think a wife might feel a slight twinge of jealously when watching her husband with another actor on-screen, but Jada had a whole different approach.
When Will told Jada that Robbie would star in Focus, “and [Jada] saw that Margot was “young and hot and in shape,” she said, “‘Boy don’t embarrass me. Get in shape now,'” Smith told E! News. “She was like, ‘Do not let that girl smash you on-screen.'”
Will Smith’s chemistry with ‘Focus’ co-star Margot Robbie sparked cheating rumors
News of Jada’s entanglement with singer-songwriter August Alsina may have sparked a new controversy. But rumors of either Smith spouse cheating — or that they have an open marriage — have swirled for years.
Even with Jada’s approval of Will’s steamy scenes with Robbie, some still believed Will and Robbie had an affair. In that same E! News interview, Robbie said Will “tastes like Christmas,” adding, “It’s like he’s just eaten a candy cane.”
But that’s just acting, right? More speculation came after the gossip magazine Star published a story alleging Will and Robbie had a scandalous affair. Sources at the time denied all accusations and Robbie weighed in on Twitter.
“Been working non-stop, just catching my breath. There’s absolutely no truth to the ridiculous rumor in Star mag…” she wrote.
All seemed to be water under the bridge until Robbie appeared on a 2018 episode of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. During a drinking game, Robbie chose to take a shot rather than answer any questions about her relationship with Will.
This, along with another Red Table Talk discussion in which Jada confessed the affair with Alsina “during a rough patch,” with Will, adding they both “made mistakes without fear of losing” their family, put Robbie in the center of more speculation.
A 2015 Marie Claire profile on Robbie revealed where she stands on dating any of her co-stars, which would obviously include Will.
“I made a conscious decision not to date actors, but not because I hate actors. That’s a nasty generalization to make, and that’s not the case,” she said.
“People take such an interest in your love life when you have a profile that it puts a lot of stress on a relationship. So two people with profiles, I figure it’s just double the amount of scrutiny, and I’d like to avoid that at all costs.”
