Everyone’s seen the meme of Will Smith looking… well, incredibly heartbroken. His eyes are red and puffy and his head looks almost too heavy for his body. It’s the perfect meme for any situation that calls for a picture of deep, weighted sadness.

The meme came from the episode of Red Table Talk where Jada discusses her “entanglement” with August Alsina. But Will and Jada swear that the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air actor wasn’t crying in response to the content of the episode.

Jada Pinkett Smith’s entanglement with August Alsina

When Jada met Alsina, she and Will were separated–it was even rumored that they’d be filing for divorce soon.

Jada opened up about her relationship with Alsina in a Red Table Talk episode back in July.

“Four and a half years ago I started a friendship with August. We actually became really, really good friends. It all started with him just needing some help, me wanting to help his health, his mental state,” she explained.

Jada went on to say that she “really felt like, at that point in time, [she and Will] could be over.” So her relationship with Alsina grew into an “entanglement.”

In the end, Jada says she learned a lot about herself–how to become a better person and partner.

“I’m grateful for the journey you and I have had together,” Jada said to Will. “One thing I’ll say about you and I is that there have never been any secrets… any relationship, in trying to get to a deeper understanding of love is going to be forged in the fire.”

Will Smith is not crying in that famous meme of him looking unbelievably despondent

Despite the heavy nature of the conversation, Will and Jada swear the I Am Legend actor isn’t crying in that now-infamous meme. He was just very tired because they were shooting so late. Apparently, it’s actually quite common for people to think Will is crying when he’s not.

“People think I’m crying all the time,” he says with a laugh in a recent YouTube video.

“And he’s not!” adds Jada. “Such a shame, such a shame. If they only knew…he doesn’t cry.”

“But it plays! It works out,” he continues.

“He wasn’t crying,” Jada insists.

Will explains that his facial expression was the result of pure exhaustion. They shot the episode late into the night and were scheduled to travel early the next morning. It was such a long night, both Will and Jada considered just rescheduling the shoot altogether.

“It was midnight, we were shooting at midnight because we were trying to rush to the airport in the morning,” said Will.

“I should’ve stuck to my first gut which was reshoot the whole dang thing,” said Jada.

But, in the end, Will thinks the footage they went with worked in his favor.

“That’s what I said, I said, ‘Reshoot it.’ But it played out!” he said. “Everybody’s like, ‘Poor Will.’”
