We’re hearing more about the Smith family than ever before thanks to Red Table Talk. While Jaden Smith isn’t often featured on the web show, he’s creating plenty of art, music, and fashion that’s getting him noticed. And he has a lot to say about growing up as a celebrity kid, too.

It seems Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith used to ask Jaden and his sister, Willow Smith, one particular question each day. Here’s what they asked.

Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith had lax rules for Jaden and Willow Smith

Will and Jada are incredibly successful in their industry, and they believe in letting their kids’ dreams come alive. In order to keep Jaden and Willow’s creativity going, Will and Jada have incredibly lax household rules. The parents have openly discussed how they don’t believe in disciplining their kids, as they want Willow and Jaden to understand that they’re responsible for their own lives.

“Our concept is, as young as possible, give them as much control over their lives as possible and the concept of punishment, our experience has been — it has a little too much of a negative quality,” Will told E! News. “So when they do things — and you know, Jaden, he’s done things — you can do anything you want as long as you can explain to me why that was the right thing to do for your life.”

Jada’s mother, Adrienne Banfield-Norris, didn’t always understand Jada and Will’s approach to parenting, either. “And your mom and dad had to really kind of break me out of that because she treated you guys like adults,” Banfield-Norris told Willow and Jaden. “And I just felt like, ‘He’s 8. He’s gonna tell me what time he’s going to bed?!’”

Jaden explained the question his parents would ask him each day

While Jaden and Willow didn’t have much restriction growing up, they still had plenty of values instilled in them from a young age. And they were taught to always help others when possible.

Jaden spoke to Desus & Mero in August 2020 about his upbringing. “My parents always taught me and my sister to just be respectful, to be chill, and just to listen to other people and what they’re going through because that’s more important than whatever I’m gonna say,” Jaden stated. “It’s about other people and their experiences, and everybody wants to feel good. Everybody’s main thing is that they wanna feel good. And if you can help them feel good, then great.”

Will and Jada also asked Jaden this one question every night to make sure he’s doing his part to make others feel good. “Every day, when you go to the dinner table, ‘How did you improve somebody’s life today, kids?'” Jaden said. “Every day, we have to think about how did we improve someone’s life.”

Jaden adores his parents and the values they instilled in him when he was young. But growing up as a celebrity kid wasn’t easy.

“You’re not a normal human if you can’t go out into the world,” Jaden explained to his mom during Red Table Talk. “I don’t know how things always work. I always get nervous at the end of dinner. How do you have dinner with a group of people? When I have dinner with my dad, he orders everything on the menu, and then he pays for everything, and then he leaves. So it’s like — Is that how we do? Does everyone expect me to do that?”

Despite having to navigate the difficult landscape of fame, Jaden and Willow have solid heads on their shoulders. And they seem to be figuring it out and creating meaningful work just fine. We’re excited to see what else they do in the future.
