Jaden Smith is one of the many famous faces who attended Kendall Jenner’s controversial Halloween birthday party on Oct. 31. Jenner hosted the costume party at the 1 Hotel in West Hollywood, Calif., and hosted guests like Kylie Jenner, Justin Bieber, Doja Cat, The Weeknd, and more.

Kris Jenner defended her daughter’s birthday celebrations in an interview with Andy Cohen on Nov. 2, saying everyone who attended the party received a COVID test upon arrival and had to test negative in order to enter. But critics of the event say that doesn’t justify hosting a party in the middle of a pandemic.

While the party’s guests have been criticized for merely attending the party, Smith is also getting criticism for his costume.

What was Jaden Smith’s Halloween costume?

Photos from the party showed Smith wearing a black coat with an oxygen mask. The oxygen mask led some to believe that Smith decided to dress as a COVID patient, and were criticizing the musician for such a seemingly tone-deaf and insensitive move. Not only did he irresponsibly attend a huge party during a pandemic, people on Twitter argued, but he also appeared to be poking fun at the pandemic with his costume.

Smith seemingly clarified the confusion around his costume on Instagram. On Nov. 2, the 22-year-old posted a photo of John David Washington in Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, which hit theaters Sept. 3. The photo showed Washington wearing a black coat and an oxygen mask, just like Smith’s costume.

“We Live In A Twilight World,” Smith captioned the post, quoting a line from the film. Fans took this as Smith saying he wasn’t dressed as a COVID patient.

“Oh so this was your Halloween costume,” one user commented.

Others thought the claim that he dressed as a COVID patient was misplaced.

“People really thinking you dressed as a sick person smh,” one said.

Chimed in another, “Bruh and people say he dressed as a corona virus patient. I’m done with snapchat news.”

Kendall Jenner Turns Off Instagram Comments After Massive Halloween Backlash

Jaden Smith and other celebrities are being criticized just for attending Kendall Jenner’s birthday party

One Twitter user called Smith out for the costume, saying it was “inhumane” to wear the mask.

“There’s just something so inhumane about Jaden Smith wearing an oxygen mask as a costume,” they said, sharing a photo of Smith taken at the party.

Other Instagram users criticized Smith for attending the party in the first place, saying he risked exposing himself to the coronavirus and didn’t act responsibly in regard to social distancing rules. With COVID cases on the rise again in the United States, it’s a fair critique to make.

“Did you catch corona?” one comment read. “Cause I don’t think you were respecting social distancing at the Halloween party.”

“You were still at a massive party while a pandemic is happening,” another said. “I thought you were smarter then that man.”

Chimed in another, “Probably shouldn’t have gone to a huge party with no social distancing during a pandemic.”

Despite the costume being based on a relevant movie character, the optics of Smith’s decision to wear an oxygen mask at a Halloween party hosted during the middle of a pandemic just aren’t good. While he wasn’t dressed as a COVID patient, choosing a Halloween costume that includes an oxygen mask when COVID symptoms can cause major respiratory issues is not a good look. Clearly, his fans expected better foresight from the star.
