Tattoos aren’t a new thing in Hollywood. While some celebrities get tattoos that symbolize something meaningful in their lives, others get them for the aesthetics and as a reminder of a movie or project they did. Actors such as Emilia Clarke and Sophie Turner have gotten tattoos to commemorate their time working on the fantasy drama series Game of Thrones.

In the period of Jake Gyllenhaal‘s career, the actor has been seen with several tattoos. Fans have always speculated about the meanings of tattoos and whether they are real or fake. Here’s what we know about Gyllenhaal’s ink situation.

Gyllenhaal had an ordinary job before becoming an actor

Gyllenhaal made his acting debut with the film City Stickers playing Billy Crystal’s son. In 1993, he and his sister Maggy appeared in A Dangerous Woman, which was their father’s film. They also appeared in Bop Gun, Homegrown and Homicide: Life on The Streets. Maggie and Gyllenhaal also cameoed for two episodes on an Italian cooking show on Food Network.

Gyllenhaal’s parents always insisted that he gets a job to support himself. Therefore, the young star secured a job working as a busboy and lifeguard while still auditioning for roles. Gyllenhaal attended Columbia University, where his mother and sister studied. He, however, dropped out after two years to pursue acting full time. Gyllenhaal has often expressed his interest in completing his degree.

The star’s lead role was in an adaptation film called October Sky, where he played a young man working toward earning a scholarship. The film and Gyllenhaal’s performance received general praise from critics. Next, Gyllenhaal starred alongside his sister in Donnie Darko. At first, the film was met with mixed reviews but aged well and is now a cult favorite. He starred in Highway, The Good Girl alongside Jennifer Aniston, and in Lovely and Amazing.

In 2005, Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger came together to play two young men who embark on a relationship in Brokeback Mountain. The film won three Academy Awards. Recently, Gyllenhaal made his MCU debut playing the villainous Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far from Home.

People pronounce the star’s name wrong all the time

Gyllenhaal was born to film director Stephen Gyllenhaal and screenwriter and director Naomi Foner. He has a famous older sister, Maggie. The Gyllenhaal siblings grew up watching their parents do what they do best, film production. It, therefore, came as no surprise when they wanted to pursue acting. The Gyllenhaals trace their roots back to Sweden. Gyllenhaal has often joked about how people find it hard to pronounce his name, saying that he only hears it right when it comes from a Swedish person’s mouth. Even his castmates, including Tom Holland, get it wrong when spelling the Gyllenhaal name.

Gyllenhaal says that people usually take an Americanized approach when pronouncing his name. When promoting the film Prince of Persia, Gyllenhaal said that the correct way of pronouncing his unique name is by starting with Jill (like a girl’s name) and finishing with in-hall. Sometimes the actor likes to confuse people with the pronunciation, as evidenced in the same Prince of Persia interview and in an interview with Conan. He used a different sound when referencing himself than what fans are used to.

Does Jake Gyllenhaal have tattoos?

Gyllenhaal is very dedicated to his craft and has often been seen undertaking method acting. For the 2015 film Southpaw, Gyllenhaal had to pack on many muscles and get tattoos to portray real-life boxer, Billy Hope. The actor received praise for his delivery of emotion and zeal at playing the boxer. However, it left most fans wondering whether the tattoos on the actor’s body were real or not. Currently, Gyllenhaal has no tattoos, and the ones he had in Southpaw were merely a result of makeup and fake ink.
