Some fans may be shocked that James Corden admits to washing his hair only once every two months. According to TooFab, the comedian was shocked when he learned that the average American spends 10 minutes showering.

“Stop, no, you’re joking me! What?!” Corden said. “If that’s the average, that means there’s people who are in there for 20 minutes. I’m in and out in a solid three or four.”

Corden then polled his Late Late Show staff to find out how long they admitted to being in the shower. He then detailed his shorter, more efficient routine.

“I use soap; I don’t wash my hair. I wash it about every two months. It’s a true story,” he revealed.

Corden also knows it’s better for the environment if everyone subscribed to his shower routine: “We’re trying to protect the planet … There is no Planet B!”

Shorter showers conserve water

One of the biggest reasons anyone might choose to take shorter showers is to help the environment. That’s especially true in places such as California, where drought is an annual occurrence and water conservation efforts are essential.

According to The New York Times, millions of Californians will experience some of the strictest water restrictions ever enforced in the state this summer. The State Water Resources Control Board with put emergency drought regulations into place. For residents, that means their local water suppliers could see a shortage of up to 20%.

Gov. Gavin Newsom has also called for Californians to cut their water usage voluntarily by as much as 15%. That includes cutting down on irrigating lawns, adopting strategies for less in-home water usage, and implementing plumbing and fixtures that promote water conservation.

When it comes to the length of a shower, most people believe the longer you are in the shower, the cleaner you will be. But according to Healthline, you can have healthy hygiene with a shower that’s only five or 10 minutes long. That includes the time it takes to use soap and rinse thoroughly.

The perks of shorter showers aren’t just environmental, either. Your skin can benefit from shorter showers, especially in the winter months when skin dries out quicker. Because soap and water can exacerbate the drying of the skin, shorter showers will help to prevent this drying and make sure your moisture barrier is retained. It’s also a good idea to keep the water warm, rather than hot, for maximum skin benefits.
