James Van Der Beek Was Once Caught With a ‘Dawson’s Creek’ Porno
When James Van Der Beek was cast in as the lead role in Dawson’s Creek his life was completely transformed. Though Van Der Beek had been steadily building up his acting resume up until that point, portraying Dawson Leery on the WB show would make him a household name practically overnight. The teen drama would achieve massive popularity and set a new standard for teen dramas.
Spanning six seasons and 128 episodes, Dawson’s Creek tells the story of a group of friends navigating growing up in fictional Capeside, Massachusetts. The show was fairly groundbreaking in its time, covering topics like sex, sexual orientation, drugs, love, etc. Van Der Beek, of course, played the title character, and received heartthrob status thanks to the show.

But Dawson’s Creek wasn’t just popular when it originally aired back in the late 90s and early 2000s. Thanks to meme culture, Van Der Beek’s infamous crying scene will live on forever. Furthemore, the show continues to find new audiences thanks to streaming services. The show was recently added to Netflix (sans the original theme song) and fans old and new are enjoying the iconic show.
Though Dawson’s Creek wrapped 18 years ago, Van Der Beek is still fielding questions about the iconic show. In a 2015 interview on The Late Late Show with James Corden, the actor reflected on the moment he realized that the show was achieving massive success. Funnily enough, it involved a parody adult film.

“God I went from signing my first autograph to getting chased down the street,” Van Der Beek revealed about how Dawson’s Creek changed his life. “I couldn’t got to the mall. Girls were getting crushed against barricades. But the moment I really realized that it was a phenomenon was when somebody made a porno version of the show. That was the moment when I realized we’d made it.”
Van Der Beek was actually given the adult film as a joke and he couldn’t wait to share it with his fellow castmates and crew to prove that they’d made it. “It was a gay porno,” the Dawson’s Creek alum revealed. “It was called Dawson’s Crack. Somebody had given it to me as like a gag gift on a movie I was doing here in L.A. And I thought ‘Oh my god, we made it.’ I couldn’t wait to bring it home and show the hair and makeup trailer ‘Guys looks at this.'”

But Van Der Beek was caught with the film before he could return to the Dawson’s Creek set. “And uh so I threw it in my bag and went through security,” the actor shared. “Of course, it was right after 9/11 and I get flagged. And they open up my suitcase and it’s right on top, like right on top. A gay porn — not only just a gay porn, but a gay porn based on a TV show that I’m in. It was a proud moment.”
It’s pretty hilarious that Van Der Beek was caught with the adult film. Though the interaction between him and TSA was probably pretty awkward at the time, the Dancing with the Stars alum seems to have a very good sense of humor about it now.
