Foxx was both absent and quiet during a good chunk of 2023. His daughter, Corinne Foxx, posted on social media that Foxx experienced a medical complication that left him hospitalized. This led to rumors running rampant about the cause of Foxx’s medical condition and the true state of his physical health.

Foxx would reemerge in the public eye in 2023 at the Critics Choice Awards, both seemingly in good spirits and in strong physical health. However, it was clear from his onstage speech that the illness he experienced took a physical toll on the actor.

“I cherish every single minute now; it’s different,” Foxx said at the Critics Choice Awards. “I wouldn’t wish what I went through on my worst enemy because it’s tough when it’s almost over. … When you see the tunnel. I saw the tunnel. I didn’t see the light.”

On Oct. 14, 2024, Foxx treated fans in Atlanta to a special and personal live show. On social media, the 56-year-old shared how much he truly valued everyone’s support.

“I have to thank you Atlanta you showed up and you showed out, I haven’t been on stage in 18 years but I needed the stage and I needed an audience that was made up of nothing but pure love and that’s what you were,” Foxx said according to People.

Foxx remained vague regarding certain details of the illness. But he once again hinted toward battling something that was far from easy to overcome.

“When people ask me is this a stand-up comedy show I say ‘No, it’s an artistic explanation,’” Foxx wrote.

“Of some thing that went terribly wrong, but thanks to the great people in Atlanta especially piedmont hospital you enabled me to come back and be on stage and do what I love to do the most…,” he added.

What Jamie Foxx has said about his illness

The illness struck the Oscar winner while he filmed the feature Back in Action along with Cameron Diaz. While promoting The Equalizer 3, Foxx’s friend Denzel Washington gave a hopeful yet cryptic update about Foxx.

“I haven’t talked with him, no, and we’re all concerned and we just pray for the best,” Washington once told Extra.

It’s unclear if Washington and his cast members knew more details about Foxx’s illness than the public did. But after his recovery, Foxx provided a few of those details himself without disclosing the true source of his condition.

“Bad headache. Asked my boy for an Advil,” Foxx said on social media according to NBC News. “I was gone for 20 days. I don’t remember anything.”

“Next doctor said, ‘There’s something going on up there,’” he added. “I won’t say it on camera.”

Apart from fan support, however, Foxx credited his own family for helping him through the horrific ordeal. He shared that they “kept it airtight, they let nothing out, they protected me. And that’s what I hope everyone could have in moments like these.”

Foxx was well aware of the exaggerated rumors that floated around the internet after his hospitalization. The In Living Color alum felt some of them were so off base that he had to set the record straight.

“By being quiet, sometimes things get out of hand, people say what I got, some people said I was blind, but as you can see, the eyes are working just fine. Said I was paralyzed, I’m not paralyzed,” Foxx said according to Rolling Stone. “I went to hell and back, and my road to recovery had some potholes as well. But I’m coming back, and I’m able to work.”
