Jason Sudeikis Explains What Really Happened During His Best Actor Acceptance Speech at the 2021 Golden Globes: ‘I Was Neither High nor Heartbroken’
Jason Sudeikis made massive headlines while accepting his 2021 Golden Globe Awards in February 2021 from his London hotel room while on lockdown while filming one of his latest shows. However, he didn’t make the headlines that he is used to making. In fact, the actor was disgusted about the reason he was making headlines and why people thought he deserved extra attention. Moreover, not only was Sudeikis annoyed with the audience for their so-called pettiness — he was downright angry about it.
Jason Sudeikis got attention for wearing a hoodie at the 2021 Golden Globes
The anger Sudeikis felt was made clear to the rest of the world when the 45-year-old funnyman went on an expletive-filled rant about how people were more concerned that he attended the Golden Globes ceremony in a hoodie, rather than his receiving a Golden Globe for Ted Lasso. Sudeikis called out naysayers for caring more about someone’s appearance than their talents and accomplishments. It upset him, and he found it completely ridiculous that people cared more about aesthetics rather than talent and accomplishments just because Sudeikis didn’t wear the typical “formal” attire that people are expected to wear to such award shows.
Sudeikis gained similar attention for his wardrobe choice when he attended the Critics Choice Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards wearing different hoodies. Sudeikis continued to stand by his fashion choices several weeks later when interviewed and asked if he thought he should have dressed a little more “formally.” He basically stated that he wore what he wore, and he liked his hoodies and didn’t regret wearing them at all. Olivia Wilde even joked that maybe Sudeikis would show up wearing a hoodie to his in-person awards shows and events when they resume in 2022.
Currently, the actor is undecided whether he will appear in a hoodie when he goes to the Emmy Awards, scheduled to be held in person and live again in September 2021.
Many fans felt for sorry Sudeikis amid his divorce from Olivia Wilde
Many fans online stated that they didn’t blame Sudeikis for wearing hoodies to the Golden Globes or the Critics Choice Awards, as he was probably feeling depressed amid his divorce from Olivia Wilde. But that couldn’t have been further from the truth.
“I wore that hoodie because I didn’t wanna f—king wear the f—king top half of a Tom Ford suit,” Sudeikis said in the August 2021 GQ cover story. “I love Tom Ford suits. But it felt weird as s—t.”
He continued: “I was neither high nor heartbroken. So yeah, off came [the suit] and it was like, ‘This is how I feel. I believe in moving forward.'”
Sudeikis’ hoodies support causes close to him
Many people may not know about Sudeikis and his love of hoodies because each hoodie he wears to an awards show represents a charity or cause close to his heart. When he attended the Golden Globes ceremony (albeit virtually), he was wearing a FORWARD hoodie, which stood for a foundation that he supports called Females for Women’s Health Research and Development. It provides training to young females in less-privileged communities to help them overcome either sexual violence or genital mutilation they have had to endure.
You can also find more information about other charities close to Sudeikis’ heart on his website, including the Alzheimer’s Association and Amnesty International, both of which are close to Sudeikis’ heart. Ultimately, Sudeikis’ message is clear: What he has to say and the content of his character, rather than the clothes a person wears to an event, is what’s truly important.
