Jay-Z, real name Shawn Carter, is officially associated with the many allegations against Sean “Diddy” Combs. A plaintiff came forward and alleged that Jay-Z raped her in 2000, and Combs allegedly assaulted her afterward with a female celebrity present. While Jay-Z and Combs have a past, Jay-Z’s lawyer says his client and Combs only had a professional relationship through the years.

Jay-Z’s lawyer says Jay-Z and Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs never had a close friendship

Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs appeared to have a friendship through the 2000s. The two rappers seemed to run in the same circles, and they complimented each other in the past. Unfortunately, Jay-Z was accused of rape in 2024. According to the plaintiff, Jay-Z raped her when she was 13 years old in the presence of Combs, who assaulted her afterward.

Jay-Z vehemently denied the claims. He asked the court to dismiss the civil lawsuit “for lack of subject matter jurisdiction due to the plaintiff’s lack of standing.” The hip-hop star’s lawyer, Alex Spiro, told Us Weekly during a roundtable press event on Dec. 16 that his client and Combs only maintained a professional relationship through the years.

“Mr. Carter has nothing to do with Mr. Combs’ case or Mr. Combs,” Spiro said. “They knew each other professionally for a number of years,” Spiro said. “Just like in all professions, people know each other. At the music awards, they support each other. If you go to the NBA All-Star game, they support each other. That’s just how professions work. There is no closer association between any of them. That’s also a matter of fiction.”

Spiro added that Jay-Z knows nothing about “the charges or allegations” against Combs.

Sean “Diddy” Combs had nice words about Jay-Z years ago. An interview with Young Hollywood shows Combs with Kim Porter while answering questions about his relationship with Jay-Z. First, the interviewer showed a photo of Combs talking into Jay-Z’s ear.

“That was at one of my birthday parties, and I was just telling him how much I appreciated him coming,” Combs said about the photo. “He was on tour, and he flew in private after one of his shows just to come to the party, and he had to fly back out. I was just telling him how much I appreciate it. You know how much I value our friendship.”

Combs added that the public saw him and Jay-Z as “competitors,” but Jay-Z attending his birthday was the perfect moment of “two Black brothers telling each other how much they appreciate each other.”

The ’99 Problems’ rapper ordered his lawyer to go after anyone lumping him in with the hip-hop mogul

Jay-Z allegedly wants nothing to do with Sean “Diddy” Combs. A source told In Touch Weekly that Jay-Z wants his lawyer “to go after anyone trying to lump him in with” Diddy. This is also why Jay-Z allegedly “threatened to sue Piers Morgan or giving a platform to someone spreading those baseless claims.”

“What P. Diddy has allegedly done is just plain evil, and [Jay-Z and Beyoncé] have nothing to do with it, but that’s not stopping the assumptions people are making,” the source explained. “At first, they were taking the stance that it was better to ignore it, but they’re now fighting back because they just can’t stand by and let their reputations get dragged into the mud over lies and conspiracy theories.”
