Jay-Z Said His and Beyoncé’s Wedding ‘Offended’ the People in Their Lives
In 2008, Jay-Z and Beyoncé married in an intimate ceremony at his Manhattan penthouse. Many people likely wanted an invite to the famous couple’s wedding, but very few people actually attended. Jay-Z and Beyoncé kept their guest list to 40 people. He said that not everyone was happy with them for that.
Jay-Z said his and Beyoncé’s marriage ceremony offended people
While Jay-Z and Beyoncé are both extremely famous, they’re private. They only wanted their family and closest friends in attendance. It was still star-studded, though. Guests included Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Chris Martin.
“[It was] very small,” Jay-Z told Oprah in 2009. “Maybe 30 people.”
Though small, the ceremony was opulent. They flew in 70,000 orchids and heavily decorated the apartment.
“It was a really pure, white wedding,” a source told People. “It was just beautiful. Gorgeous. Opulent.”
The attendees praised the ceremony. Those who didn’t get an invite weren’t as happy about it, though. Jay-Z said they offended some of the people in their lives with the limited guest list.
“The sad part is that we offended some,” he said. “But people who love you understand. Because at the end of the day, it’s your day.”
Beyoncé said she didn’t want to rush into marriage with Jay-Z
Jay-Z and Beyoncé were together for seven years before they tied the knot. She said she didn’t feel any pressure to rush into things.
“I’m only 27, so I was really young,” she said, per Today. “I feel like it’s important for women and men to have their goals and their own life before they can complete someone else. So we took our time.”
When they did marry, she didn’t think they needed a flashy wedding to prove their love.
“What Jay and I have is real. It’s not about interviews or getting the right photo op. It’s real,” she said. She didn’t want anything big because “it’s been my day so many days already.”
The couple rarely speak about their relationship
Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s small wedding is hardly surprising considering how private the couple is. Neither of them likes to talk about their relationship.
“I don’t actually talk about who I’m dating, who I’m not, because I think it’s important that I concentrate on the music and when you start talking about those things, then that becomes bigger than the art,” Beyoncé said.
He agrees with her. In order to stay grounded as a celebrity, he said it was necessary to keep parts of his life away from the public.
“I just think it’s really a part of your life that you gotta keep to yourself … You have to, or you’ll go insane in this type of business,” he said, per Yahoo!. “You have to have something that’s sacred to you and the people around you … I shared so much of my life, my childhood, and my family, the death of my nephew with the world. I should have something to hold on to. You need something for your sanity to say, ‘Okay, I could chill out, and this is it.’”
