Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling React After Jessica Alba Claims She Wasn’t Allowed to Make Eye Contact With ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ Cast
Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling are addressing Jessica Alba’s claims about the atmosphere on the Beverly Hills, 90210 set.
During a Hot Ones interview that aired Oct. 1, Alba said she wasn’t allowed to make eye contact with cast members during her 1998 guest appearance on Fox’s ‘90s teen drama. A few days later, Garth and Spelling fired back, with Spelling saying she was “horrified” by the other performer’s recollection of her stint on the show.
Jessica Alba says her time on ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ was ‘really strange’
In 1998, Alba landed a two-episode gig on 90210. She played a pregnant teen named Leanne. Working on the show came with some odd rules, she recalled.
“On the set of 90210, I couldn’t even make eye contact with any of the cast members, which was really strange when you’re, like, trying to do a scene with them,” Alba said as she downed wings doused in hot sauce. “It was like, ‘You’re not allowed to make eye contact with any one of the cast members or you’ll be thrown off the set.'”
Jennie Garth says she only has ‘vague memories’ of working with Alba
After Alba dished about the weird environment on the 90210 set, Garth felt she needed to weigh in. In an episode of her and co-star Spelling’s new podcast 9021OMG, the actor had nothing but praise for Alba, but admitted she didn’t recall much about her time working with the LA’s Finest star. She said she didn’t remember requesting that guest stars not make eye contact with her.
“Tori, did you, I just need to know, did you tell her not to look me in the eye?” Garth asked in a teaser for the episode.
Spelling wondered if Alba might have heard the “no eye contact” rule from someone else on the show. Perhaps there was a “memo that was, like, going around from the producers or the ADs and we didn’t even know,” she said, laughing. “Imagine, we just thought guest stars didn’t like us!”
Garth went on to say that she was the one who had the most scenes with Alba.
“Like, if anybody was, you know, didn’t want to have their eyes looked into, it would have been me,” she said. “But, I don’t remember because I have the world’s worst memory.”
“I only have, from the vague memories I have of working with her, I only remember her being super talented,” Garth added. “She was very young. She was really sweet, and it does not surprise me that she’s gone on to be so successful.”
Why Tori Spelling says she was ‘horrified’ by Alba’s story
Spelling went on to say she was a huge fan of the baby products sold by The Honest Company, which Alba founded.
“I’m not going to lie to you guys: I was a little horrified when I saw that clip that she said that she wasn’t allowed to make eye contact and she had an awful experience because her baby wipes are my favorite,” Spelling said. “Like, I wipe my child’s *ss with her baby wipes every single day. I’m so upset right now.”
