Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck Got Married Because ‘the World Wanted It,’ Inside Source Claims
Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck were once the celebrity world’s best love story. The exes’ relationship goes back more than 20 years, and Lopez said that her first breakup with Affleck was “really hard.” That’s why when the two reconciled in 2021 and officially wed (after calling the first one off) in 2022, people were loving every second of it.
However, they say all good things must end, and such was the case for this couple’s newfound romance. In August 2024, Lopez filed for divorce from Affleck, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason. But one source claims the two wed because “the world wanted it.”
Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s marriage was short-lived
Lopez and Affleck first began dating after meeting on the set of “Gigli” in 2002. The movie did not succeed at the box office, but the two did come away with a new relationship, so it wasn’t a total loss. Their romance blossomed quickly, and by 2003, they were ready to have a wedding. However, the couple called off the big day, and at the time, they blamed it on the media frenzy surrounding their love. But things fizzled out by 2004, and they ended the relationship for good.
Lopez and Affleck each went on to live separate lives and have separate families before ultimately reconnecting in 2021. Things moved quickly, and by 2022, they had officially tied the knot in an elegant ceremony in Georgia. But exactly two years later, Lopez filed for divorce. Still, an inside source says the two did really want to be in love and be together, but that the whole world wanted their marriage, too.
“They were really going to give it a try, and they did,” a source told People. “These are two people who are in love with love, and who wouldn’t jump into that? And the world wanted it.”
However, the source also added that Garner and Affleck are “very different people” — it’s possible that they couldn’t agree on how to navigate their marriage. “She’s super public and wants to go out, and he’s more of an introvert and is happy to hang out at home.”
Ben Affleck continues to co-parent with Jennifer Garner amid divorce
Affleck shares three children with ex-wife Jennifer Garner, and although things were tumultuous between Affleck and Lopez in recent months, he and Garner have maintained a close friendship. In the days leading up to the divorce, Affleck accompanied Garner and their kids on a vacation to Japan. Shortly after returning home, Garner celebrated Affleck’s birthday with him and the kids at his rental home.
It’s unclear if Garner and Affleck’s trip had anything to do with Lopez ultimately filing for divorce; it never appeared that Lopez had a problem with Garner and Affleck’s friendship, so it likely didn’t impact her decision to file. Plus, she noted her date of separation from Affleck was back in April 2024.
