For pop-culture fans around the world, the news that Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck might once again be an item is some of the best news of the year thus far. Lopez, who is fresh from a split with Alex Rodriguez, was notably involved in a high-profile romance with Affleck in the early 2000s, one that resulted in an engagement and a lot of media attention — before things inevitably fizzled out.

With the future of their newly rekindled affair uncertain, many fans are looking to the past and rediscovering many of the finest “Bennifer” moments — including the time when Lopez based one of her biggest albums on her relationship with the actor.

It all started in 2001 for Affleck and Lopez when the two major Hollywood stars met on the set of the movie Gigli, in which they were co-stars. While the movie was a massive flop, the relationship between Affleck and Lopez blossomed, and the two started dating.

Just around a year later, Affleck proposed to Lopez, presenting the superstar with a custom pink diamond engagement ring. The news of their engagement made headlines around the world. Fans couldn’t get enough of the couple, but ultimately, the media attention would play a significant role in their split.

In September 2003, mere days before their wedding was set to take place, Affleck and Lopez released a joint statement, declaring that they had decided to postpone the wedding — and just three months after that, the couple split up for good.

These days, Lopez is best known for her movies. However, in the early days of her career, she worked equally hard at her musical career, releasing hit album after hit album.

In fact, her third album, This Is Me … Then, released in 2002, took a lot of cues from Lopez’s real-life — even down to her romance with Affleck, which was in full force at that time. According to Slate, Lopez was directly inspired by her relationship with Affleck when creating the album, even putting the actor as a featured player in the music video for the song “Jenny From the Block.”

Other songs, like “Dear Ben” even call the actor out by name, featuring lots of loving language, including lyrics such as “You’ll always be my lust, my love, my man, my child, my friend and my king.”

As a final touch, Lopez dedicated the entire album to Affleck, calling him out in the album credits for his support and unwavering affection. The album stands today as a cultural touchstone — and it remains to be seen whether Lopez will dedicate more projects to Affleck in the future.
