What Jennifer Lopez Did to Distract Herself From Her Divorce From Marc Anthony
Jennifer Lopez has been engaged and married quite a few times. But to fans, her most meaningful and grounded relationship was with her ex-husband, Marc Anthony. The two were married for seven years before calling it quits. There’s hope from fans that they’ll one day reunite. Lopez admits that the split from Anthony was brutal. So much so that she dived into a major work project to put her focus elsewhere.
Jennifer Lopez went on tour amid her divorce proceedings
Lopez and Anthony married the same year she ended her engagement to Ben Affleck in 2004. They wed in a private ceremony at her Beverly Hills home, just a month after Anthony’s own divorce was finalized.
In addition to their personal lives being merged, they worked alongside one another, starring in the 2006 biopic El Cantante and recording music together. In 2007 while on stage in front of a crowd of 10,000 fans, the couple announced they were expectant parents. Lopez gave birth to their twins, Max and Emme, in February 2008.
In 2011, they announced their split. Within months, Lopez was on a worldwide tour, the first in her career. In an interview with Lorraine Kelly, Lopez explained the tour, titled Dance Again after her single of the same name, was an intentional decision.
“It was a hard time and deciding to go on tour really came from the fact that I was in a lot of pain at the time,” she admitted. “I just needed something else to focus on. It really held up a meeting to who I was and who I’d been and who I was becoming. And what I was learning. I went through probably the hardest part in my life, going through a divorce with kids is one of the hardest things ever, really difficult, the loss of that dream. To find a new dream, to pick yourself back up, to dance again became the message.”
The ‘Selena’ star’s family spoke about the divorce in the ‘Dance Again’ documentary
Lopez and her family spoke about her split from Anthony in the Dance Again documentary, with Lopez explaining that she poured herself into work. “Work is a blessing and a curse,” she admitted. “I remember being on the set and being in my dressing room and not feeling like I could get up in the morning.”
Lopez explained that she was heartbroken because she came from divorced parents. “That wasn’t my dream, my dream was for us to always be together,” Lopez said. “You never want to break up a family.” She retold a story to the camera crew about her daughter Emme buying a heart-shaped necklace to remember her Anthony when he’s not around. Lopez cried sharing the story.
Her sister, Lynda, said that her marriage to Anthony wasn’t a fairytale. “Things were in such a great period, in her life. American Idol was fantastic, the On The Floor album came out,” she explained. “She wanted to plan a tour. There was so much that was going well at work and her career and that all was coinciding with things going not good at home and not good for her personally.”
Lopez and Anthony eventually became close friends after their divorce. They even famously kissed at the Latin Grammy Awards in 2016 where Anthony was being honored for his work. Anthony remarried, but his marriage ended in 2017. Lopez has dated several high-profile men since their split.
