Jennifer Lopez has typically had trouble with her relationships in the past. However, she was confident that she’d finally gotten her love life right after meeting this ex-boyfriend.

Lopez had high hopes for all of her past relationships. But at one point, she was so smitten by Alex Rodriguez that she considered him a cut above the rest. The Hustlers star began dating Rodriguez in 2017, although she first met him in 2005. Rodriguez gave Lopez everything she was looking for in a partner, so much so that he initially seemed too good to be true. But after Rodriguez proved himself to Lopez, she accepted his proposal for marriage in 2019. In an interview with Sirius XM, Lopez shared how similarities, such as their work ethic, made them a good match.

“It’s great to have a best friend and a partner that you could really build with,” she said. “And I just feel like with Alex and I, that’s what it’s like. We’re both very similar.”

“Having somebody who understands you from the inside, as far as like, ‘I really want to work hard. I really love what I do and I want to work hard at it and understand that. It doesn’t mean that I don’t love you. We love each other, but we’re doing this together,’” Lopez added.

Even Lopez’s friends like Leah Remini saw how happy she was with the baseball star. Eventually, Lopez confided that she had more faith in her future with Rodriguez than she had with her past romances.

“I’m in a good relationship. I feel like I can say that for the first time – I don’t know – maybe ever,” she once told Hola! (via Exhibit A). “And not that I didn’t have great relationships, full of love and adventure, but this is the first relationship I’ve been where I feel like we really make each other better. We compliment each other, and there’s really pure true love. Just wanting to support the other person and make them happy. So, there’s a different selflessness in the love that’s beautiful and different. And healthy!”

Lopez later felt she and Rodriguez weren’t as compatible as she might’ve thought. The pair would announce their break-up on April, 15, 2021, but reassured they would remain in each other’s lives.

“We have realized we are better as friends and look forward to remaining so. We will continue to work together and support each other on our shared businesses and projects,” they said in a joint statement obtained by the Today Show. “We wish the best for each other and one another’s children. Out of respect for them, the only other comment we have to say is thank you to everyone who has sent kind words and support.”

But an insider may have provided a little more context behind their break-up. Speaking with People, the source claimed Rodriguez wanted to maintain his relationship with Lopez. But the singer was allegedly determined to move on after her trust in Rodriguez was shaken. Rodriguez allegedly didn’t cheat, like he was known to do in the past. But Lopez still wasn’t willing to take a gamble on his loyalty.

“She won’t tolerate the fear of it in the air between them,” the source said.

Additionally, Lopez and Rodriguez weren’t as captivated by each other as they once were, and their chemistry started fading with time.

“They both liked spending more time together as a family, but it was difficult to keep that special spark when they saw each other every day,” they said.
